 1-4                                     of

 1-5                              Santiago Martinez

 1-6           WHEREAS, The citizens of Corpus Christi mourned the passing of

 1-7     one of the city's esteemed residents, Santiago Martinez, who died

 1-8     February 1, 1997, at the age of 71; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Known to his family and friends as Chago, Mr. Martinez

1-10     had owned and operated Chago Plumbing in Corpus Christi for over

1-11     30 years; and

1-12           WHEREAS, The well-known businessman was highly respected and

1-13     admired by his colleagues as well as his customers for his honesty

1-14     and excellent work; and

1-15           WHEREAS, A native of Robstown, Texas, Santiago served with

1-16     valor in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the

1-17     USS Triumph; for distinguished service he was awarded six

1-18     campaign ribbons; and

1-19           WHEREAS, After completing his tour of duty, Mr. Martinez moved

1-20     to Corpus Christi, where he and his wife, Guadalupe, provided a

1-21     nurturing home for their three children; and

1-22           WHEREAS, He began working for the Corpus Christi Independent

1-23     School District as the plumbing supervisor in 1980 and continued

 2-1     in that position until his retirement in 1995; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, Mr. Martinez contributed his time and abilities to

 2-3     the betterment of his community all his adult life and was a

 2-4     member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Proud of his family, he was a loving husband, father,

 2-6     grandfather, and great-grandfather; his memory will continue to

 2-7     live in the hearts and minds of all who shared his life; now,

 2-8     therefore, be it

 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-10     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the

2-11     family of Santiago "Chago" Martinez; his wife of 50 years,

2-12     Guadalupe; his daughter, Leticia; his sons, Manfredo and James;

2-13     his sister, Maria Perez; his brother, Manfredo Martinez; and his

2-14     four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and, be it

2-15     further

2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-17     members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from

2-18     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it

2-19     do so in memory of Santiago Martinez.
