 1-3                                  In Memory

 1-4                                     of

 1-5                             Harry Lee Hafernick

 1-6           WHEREAS, The citizens of Jackson County mourned the passing

 1-7     of one of the area's most esteemed residents, Harry Lee Hafernick,

 1-8     who died on October 12, 1996, at the age of 76; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Throughout his long and productive life,

1-10     Mr. Hafernick made valuable contributions to his community through

1-11     his civic involvement and his conservation farming practices; and

1-12           WHEREAS, He was born on September 15, 1920, and spent his

1-13     childhood on a farm near El Campo, where he developed a deep

1-14     interest in agriculture; he graduated from El Campo High School

1-15     in 1938 and attended The University of Texas at Austin on a track

1-16     scholarship; during World War II he served his country for four

1-17     years as a lieutenant in the United States Navy; and

1-18           WHEREAS, After returning to civilian life, Harry Hafernick

1-19     taught school for two years and then became a full-time rice

1-20     farmer; he had been a resident of Jackson County since 1954 and,

1-21     through the years, devoted his time and energies to various civic

1-22     organizations; he was a member and past president of the Jackson

1-23     Chamber of Commerce, the Edna Independent School Board, the Gulf

 2-1     Coast Association of Soil and Water Conservation, and the

 2-2     Lavaca-Navidad River Authority; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, Recognized by the citizens of Jackson County

 2-4     for his notable contributions to his profession and his county,

 2-5     Mr. Hafernick was named Man of the Year in 1967; he was also honored

 2-6     in 1971 when he was chosen the outstanding conservation farmer of

 2-7     Texas; and

 2-8           WHEREAS, A devoted husband and father, Mr. Hafernick was

 2-9     married to Mildred Meek Hafernick, and the couple provided a

2-10     nurturing home life for their three children, Edie, Ann, and Lee;

2-11     and

2-12           WHEREAS, Living his faith in his daily life, the devout

2-13     Christian gentleman served on the board of directors of

2-14     First United Methodist Church; and

2-15           WHEREAS, His wise council and sound judgment will be deeply

2-16     missed by all those whose lives he touched, and his memory will

2-17     continue to live on in the hearts and minds of his loved ones; now,

2-18     therefore, be it

2-19           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-20     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the

2-21     family of Harry Lee Hafernick:  his wife, Mildred; his daughters,

2-22     Edie Hafernick and Ann Mozisek; his son, Lee Hafernick; his sisters,

2-23     Isabel Gossett and Evelyn Rice; his brothers, Frank Hafernick and

2-24     John Hafernick; and his seven grandchildren; and, be it further

2-25           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared

 3-1     for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the

 3-2     Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it

 3-3     do so in memory of Harry Lee Hafernick.
