 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas would like to honor

 1-4     Texas Lutheran University of Seguin on the occasion of its name

 1-5     change from Texas Lutheran College on August 28, 1996; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, The First German Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Texas

 1-7     founded this revered institution as the Evangelical Lutheran College

 1-8     of Brenham, Texas, on September 2, 1891; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, In 1912 the Business Men's Club of Seguin offered to

1-10     move the school to Seguin in exchange for 10 years of free water and

1-11     electricity, $20,000, and 15 acres of land, and the school accepted

1-12     this generous offer; and

1-13           WHEREAS, Welcomed enthusiastically by the members of the

1-14     community, the educational institution was renamed the Lutheran

1-15     College of Seguin, and it began to grow and prosper; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Ranked as a junior college in 1928, the institution

1-17     merged with Trinity Lutheran College of Round Rock in 1929, and it

1-18     became Texas Lutheran College in 1932; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Becoming a senior college fully accredited by the

1-20     Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in 1953, Texas Lutheran

1-21     College merged with Clifton College in 1954; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Dedicated to the spirit of Christian service which

1-23     first inspired its founders, the school currently serves over 1,300

 2-1     students and has two campuses; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, Having earned a well-deserved reputation for

 2-3     superiority throughout the nation, Texas Lutheran University

 2-4     continues to offer outstanding educational opportunities to men

 2-5     and women and to serve as an example of excellence; now, therefore,

 2-6     be it

 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-8     75th Legislature, hereby commend Texas Lutheran University on its

 2-9     new name; and, be it further

2-10           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for this

2-11     superb institution as an expression of the high regard of the

2-12     Texas Senate.
