 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, Seldom in the annals of the University

 1-4     Interscholastic League has there been a team such as the 1972

 1-5     Roosevelt High School Basketball Team from Dallas, which won

 1-6     the Class 4A State Championship in basketball that year; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, The University Interscholastic League will be

 1-8     recognizing these 1972 champions during the 1997 Boys State

 1-9     Basketball Tournament on March 8, 1997; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Roosevelt was the first Dallas high school to

1-11     win the University Interscholastic League basketball championship

1-12     after desegregation, and its outstanding team set scoring records

1-13     in the state league and the all-star player broke the league's 4A

1-14     individual player's scoring record; neither record has been broken

1-15     since that time; and

1-16           WHEREAS, The team members who comprised that championship

1-17     group were:  Marsalis Abney, Ronald Brown, Jerry Davis,

1-18     Clarence Denard, Leroy Edwards, Steven Giles, Eger Hopkins,

1-19     Clarence Jackson, Robert Johnson, Charles Marshell, Melvin Moore,

1-20     Melvin Price, Larry Ray, Harvey Scott, and Ira Terrell; they were

1-21     fortunate to have Ellis Davis, Jr., as their coach and

1-22     George Martin as their assistant coach; the managers were

1-23     Reginald Gray and Manzell Robertson; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, The players, managers, and coaches were praised

 2-2     for their teamwork and desire for excellence that made them a

 2-3     winning team; now, therefore, be it

 2-4           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-5     75th Legislature, hereby congratulate the 1972 Class 4A State

 2-6     Basketball champions from Roosevelt High School of Dallas; and,

 2-7     be it further

 2-8           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

 2-9     the team as an expression of the high esteem of the Texas Senate.
