1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, It is indeed a privilege for the Texas Senate 1-4 to recognize Belen B. Robles for her notable contributions to 1-5 Hispanic Americans; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Mrs. Robles has been elected to serve as the 1-7 national president of the League of United Latin American Citizens, 1-8 the oldest and largest Hispanic civil rights organization in the 1-9 nation; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The first woman to be so honored, Mrs. Robles has 1-11 been an active member of the organization for nearly 40 years and 1-12 brings a wealth of experience to her position, having held several 1-13 important elected and appointed positions on both the local and 1-14 national level; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Throughout her four decades of being closely 1-16 involved in community affairs, she has worked diligently to ensure 1-17 that the culture, history, and economic conditions of her fellow 1-18 citizens are not disregarded and that economic and educational 1-19 opportunity are fostered by a commitment to equity; and 1-20 WHEREAS, Additionally, she has a 37-year history of 1-21 in-depth experience in the Immigration and Naturalization Service 1-22 and United States Customs; she is the current Director of Community 1-23 Relations for the El Paso District of the United States Customs 2-1 Service and Chief Inspector for Cargo Operations at the Bridge of 2-2 the Americas; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Fluent in both English and Spanish, Belen Robles 2-4 has devoted time and energy to a variety of different community 2-5 groups; she is director of the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce 2-6 and past director of the Rio Grande Girl Scouts Council; she is a 2-7 member of the City Charter Commission as well as the redistricting 2-8 and cultural affairs committees; and 2-9 WHEREAS, On the federal level, the dynamic leader has 2-10 served as advisor to cabinet hearings on Mexican American affairs 2-11 and as national chair of the Advisory Committee to the Immigration 2-12 and Naturalization Service Commissioner; and 2-13 WHEREAS, Her exceptional work on behalf of Hispanics has 2-14 received national attention and she is the recipient of several 2-15 prestigious honors; Mrs. Robles was awarded the Chamizal Medallion 2-16 by former President Lyndon B. Johnson and was named to "Ten 2-17 Outstanding Women in Federal Service"; listed in Who's Who of the 2-18 World, she was honored as LULAC Woman of the Year and received a 2-19 Sustained Superior Performance Award by United States Customs; and 2-20 WHEREAS, In her private life, Belen Robles is married to 2-21 Ramiro Robles and they are the parents of three fine children, 2-22 Mary Helen LoPresti, Carlos Francisco, and Ramiro, Jr.; now, 2-23 therefore, be it 2-24 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-25 75th Legislature, hereby commend and applaud Belen B.
