No. 171 1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 James Alvan Killgore 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-7 of San Angelo in mourning the loss of James Alvan Killgore, who 1-8 died January 29, 1997, at the age of 70; and 1-9 WHEREAS, The beloved gentleman will be deeply missed by his 1-10 family and friends and will be remembered with gratitude for his 1-11 dedication to the people of his community; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Born into a military family on April 6, 1926, at 1-13 Fort Sam Houston, Texas, James Killgore spent his childhood in the 1-14 Republic of the Philippines and at several Texas military bases; he 1-15 earned his Eagle Scout Award in 1943; and 1-16 WHEREAS, After graduating from Schreiner Institute in 1-17 Kerrville in 1944, young James was inducted into the United States 1-18 Army Air Corps on June 19, 1944, and served with the Army of 1-19 Occupation in Germany; and 1-20 WHEREAS, After attending the United States Military Academy, 1-21 he moved to Dallas and graduated from Southern Methodist University 1-22 in 1952 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics; he was awarded 1-23 a regular commission in the Air Force as an honor graduate of the 2-1 university's Reserve Officers' Training Corps program; and 2-2 WHEREAS, A devoted family man, Major Killgore married his 2-3 wife, Le, on July 24, 1948, in Poughkeepsie, New York, and the 2-4 couple became the proud parents of three children; an enthusiastic 2-5 photographer and historian, he enriched each tour of duty for his 2-6 family by taking them to nearby places of interest; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The retired air force major had travelled throughout 2-8 the world during his military career that spanned nearly 28 years; 2-9 a supply and logistics specialist, he served in England, Peru, and 2-10 the Canal Zone and on a number of bases in the United States; he 2-11 moved with his family to San Angelo in 1972 when he became chief 2-12 of supply at Goodfellow Air Force Base; and 2-13 WHEREAS, His retirement in 1974 marked the end of a brilliant 2-14 military career; for commendable service, Major Killgore was awarded 2-15 numerous medals including the Bronze Star and the Meritorious 2-16 Service Medal; and 2-17 WHEREAS, His generosity and compassion found expression in 2-18 his community service; Major Killgore helped organize the highly 2-19 successful Senior Citizens Nutrition Program in 1977 and became its 2-20 first administrator; he served the first meal to elderly people at 2-21 the Central Recreation Center; and 2-22 WHEREAS, Always ready to help others, the esteemed individual 2-23 was on the founding board of directors of the Adult Day Care Center 2-24 and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program; a 32nd degree Mason, 2-25 Major Killgore was a Shriner and member of the Concho Shrine Club, 3-1 Suez Temple; and 3-2 WHEREAS, His exemplary life of service will stand as a legacy 3-3 to the citizens of San Angelo, and his accomplishments will continue 3-4 to benefit others in the years to come; now, therefore, be it 3-5 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-6 75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the members 3-7 of his family: his wife, Le; his daughter, Lynne; his sons, Robert 3-8 and Andy; his five grandchildren; and his sisters, Eloise D'Amore 3-9 and Ethel Taylor; and, be it further 3-10 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his 3-11 family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, 3-12 and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of 3-13 James Alvan Killgore. 3-14 ______________________________________ 3-15 President of the Senate 3-16 I hereby certify that the above 3-17 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-18 on February 17, 1997, by a rising vote. 3-19 ______________________________________ 3-20 Secretary of the Senate 3-21 ______________________________________ 3-22 Member, Texas Senate
