 1-2                                  In Memory

 1-3                                     of

 1-4                          Dr. Robert Melville Finks

 1-5           WHEREAS, The death of the highly respected and pioneering

 1-6     physician, Dr. Robert Melville Finks of San Angelo, Texas, on

 1-7     January 9, 1997, was greatly mourned by his family, friends,

 1-8     and patients; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, This beloved doctor gave unselfishly of himself to

1-10     his family and his community; Dr. Finks was the first pediatrician

1-11     between Fort Worth and El Paso; he came to San Angelo in 1933,

1-12     before antibiotics were in general use; and

1-13           WHEREAS, Born on May 7, 1904, in Pulaski, Virginia,

1-14     Dr. Finks received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University

1-15     Medical School in 1930; having pursued his postgraduate training

1-16     and residency in pediatrics, he entered private practice in

1-17     San Angelo in 1933; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Becoming a member of the Rush, Schulkey, Wall,

1-19     and Windham Clinic, Dr. Finks also founded, with the late

1-20     Dr. Bob Arledge, Baby Clinic Children's Treatment Center,

1-21     providing free pediatric medical care to children who otherwise

1-22     might not have received adequate care; and

1-23           WHEREAS, Playing a crucial role during the polio epidemic

 2-1     in the late 1940s and early 1950s, Dr. Finks and the late

 2-2     Dr. Arledge accumulated so much experience with treatment

 2-3     that other doctors consulted with them often; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, Committed to community life, Dr. Finks served

 2-5     on the boards of several organizations, including Angelo

 2-6     Community Hospital, Planned Parenthood, Medical Advisory

 2-7     Board, and Texas Rehabilitation Center in Gonzales; and

 2-8           WHEREAS, Dedicated to his profession, he was a member of

 2-9     the American Medical Association, Southern Medical Association,

2-10     Texas Medical Association, Texas Pediatrics Society, and

2-11     American College of Allergy; he will be greatly missed; now,

2-12     therefore, be it

2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-14     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the

2-15     members of his family:  his wife, Mary Elizabeth; his daughters,

2-16     Anne Belle Hughes and Mary Carolyn Finks; and his two

2-17     grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and, be it further

2-18           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-19     the members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy

2-20     from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this

2-21     day, it do so in memory of Dr. Robert Melville Finks.
