1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to 1-4 recognize the members of the Texas Silver-Haired Legislature as 1-5 they gather at the State Capitol on March 6, 1997; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The Texas Silver-Haired Legislature is an elected, 1-7 representative, nonpartisan body of citizens over 60 years of 1-8 age, elected by persons in the same age group, who meet in the 1-9 Texas Capitol to consider and draft resolutions that concern the 1-10 needs of older Texans, both present and future; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Its objectives are to provide older Texans an 1-12 opportunity to become knowledgeable about the legislative process 1-13 through involvement and to develop a forum for older Texans to 1-14 discuss senior citizens' issues; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Members will have the opportunity to introduce, 1-16 discuss, and pass resolutions dealing with major concerns of the 1-17 state; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Elected for a two-year term, representatives make 1-19 a valuable contribution to the state by informing the state 1-20 legislature of the requirements of older Texans and identifying 1-21 issues of significance for the future; and 1-22 WHEREAS, A nonpartisan and nonprofit organization, the 1-23 first Silver-Haired Legislature was organized in 1973 in the 2-1 State of Missouri; since its establishment, the concept has been 2-2 adopted by 26 other states; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Through legislative involvement, older citizens 2-4 can become a viable political force in their communities, their 2-5 state, and their nation; now, therefore, be it 2-6 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-7 75th Legislature, hereby commend the representatives of the Texas 2-8 Silver-Haired Legislature for their efforts on behalf of all senior 2-9 Texans and extend best wishes for a most productive and rewarding 2-10 legislative session; and, be it further 2-11 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-12 this distinguished group as an expression of the high regard and 2-13 appreciation of the Texas Senate. 2-14 Wentworth 2-15 Armbrister Galloway Ogden 2-16 Barrientos Harris Patterson 2-17 Bivins Haywood Ratliff 2-18 Brown Lindsay Shapiro 2-19 Cain Lucio Shapleigh 2-20 Carona Luna Sibley 2-21 Duncan Madla Truan 2-22 Ellis Moncrief West 2-23 Fraser Nelson Whitmire 2-24 Gallegos Nixon Zaffirini 2-25 Bullock, President of the Senate 2-26 ______________________________________ 2-27 President of the Senate 2-28 I hereby certify that the above 2-29 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-30 on March 6, 1997. 2-31 ______________________________________ 2-32 Secretary of the Senate 2-33 ______________________________________ 2-34 Member, Texas Senate
