 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride

 1-4     in recognizing Gerardo Fernandez, a member of the 1997 Texas

 1-5     All-State Academic Team; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, Gerardo Fernandez is one of six El Paso Community

 1-7     College students who are competing in the national USA Today/PTK

 1-8     Academic All-American competition; the students are being honored

 1-9     February 20, 1997, in Austin as part of the Texas All-State

1-10     Academic Team; and

1-11           WHEREAS, These El Paso Community College students are

1-12     academically gifted students and are members of the Phi Theta

1-13     Kappa Texas Chapter for high academic achievers; and

1-14           WHEREAS, Gerardo is a 19-year-old student born in

1-15     Buenos Aires, Argentina, who has lived in the United States for

1-16     only four years; in spite of his need to learn a new culture

1-17     and a new language, he has excelled in academics; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Having completed his associate's degree in

1-19     electronics, he plans to attend The University of Texas at

1-20     El Paso and major in electrical engineering, mathematics, and

1-21     physics; he intends to pursue a doctorate in all three fields;

1-22     and

1-23           WHEREAS, Already an academic success, he has taken honors

 2-1     classes in calculus and physics while maintaining a 4.0 grade

 2-2     point average, and he has earned a research grant and several

 2-3     scholarships; now, therefore, be it

 2-4           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-5     75th Legislature, hereby congratulate Gerardo Fernandez for

 2-6     being a member of the 1997 Texas All-State Academic Team and

 2-7     extend best wishes for his continued success; and, be it further

 2-8           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared

 2-9     for Gerardo Fernandez as an expression of esteem from the

2-10     Texas Senate.
