 1-3                                  In Memory

 1-4                                     of

 1-5                                 Homer Olsen

 1-6           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens

 1-7     of Austin in mourning the loss of Homer Olsen, who died

 1-8     February 9, 1997, at the age of 88; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Homer Olsen graduated from Austin High School and

1-10     attended The University of Texas at Austin; and

1-11           WHEREAS, Mr. Olsen was dedicated to his work as a journalist

1-12     for 47 years; he began working in 1928 at the Austin Statesman,

1-13     which later merged with the Austin American to form the

1-14     Austin American-Statesman; he served as a copy editor, editorial

1-15     page editor, and sports editor before retiring in 1975; and

1-16           WHEREAS, He was well known for his columns on the history of

1-17     the City of Austin and for his ability to capture the flavor of the

1-18     past and of the colorful lives of the city's early residents; and

1-19           WHEREAS, During his career, he took breaks from the

1-20     Statesman to work as a press secretary for James Allred and to

1-21     work for The Associated Press in Kansas City, the

1-22     Wichita Falls Record News, and the Dallas Morning News; and

1-23           WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman, Homer Olsen

 2-1     was respected in the community for his many accomplishments and was

 2-2     beloved by many; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, A man of integrity and generosity, he will long be

 2-4     remembered for his engaging personality, warmth, and wisdom; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Homer Olsen was a member of

 2-6     Northwest Hills United Methodist Church; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, Homer Olsen was a devoted husband, father, and

 2-8     grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured

 2-9     forever by his family and many friends; now, therefore, be it

2-10           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-11     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved

2-12     family of Homer Olsen:  his wife, Florence Olsen; his daughter,

2-13     Marilyn Potvin; his son, Lawrence Olsen; and his 10 grandchildren;

2-14     and, be it further

2-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-16     members of his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from

2-17     the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it

2-18     do so in memory of Homer Olsen.
