1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, Loyal Corpus Christi residents will journey to the 1-4 State Capitol on February 19, 1997, to extoll and pay tribute to 1-5 their beloved city on Corpus Christi Day; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Beginning as a trading post on the frontier in 1839, 1-7 the City of Corpus Christi is now the eighth largest city in Texas; 1-8 the city has been fortunate to keep its pleasing quality of life 1-9 while increasing in population; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The City of Corpus Christi, in the true spirit of 1-11 America, has been home to immigrants from around the world who 1-12 have contributed to the ongoing development and prosperity of the 1-13 community; and 1-14 WHEREAS, The City of Corpus Christi is the birthplace of 1-15 two national Hispanic civil rights organizations: LULAC, founded 1-16 in 1929; and, the American G.I. Forum, whose Founder in 1948 was 1-17 the late Dr. Hector P. Garcia, recipient of the Medal of Freedom; 1-18 and 1-19 WHEREAS, Corpus Christi's Bay Area has a healthy economic 1-20 growth rate which is higher than the national or state average; 1-21 and 1-22 WHEREAS, Located near the Padre Island National Seashore, a 1-23 renowned recreational area, Corpus Christi has long been a favorite 2-1 vacation spot for tourists; and 2-2 WHEREAS, The city is home to two excellent centers of higher 2-3 education: Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi and Del Mar 2-4 College; and 2-5 WHEREAS, The deepest port in Texas and the sixth busiest 2-6 port in the nation, this delightful city receives ships from 2-7 most countries of the world with major cargoes of oil and refined 2-8 products, bulk materials, chemicals, and agricultural products; 2-9 and 2-10 WHEREAS, Vessels carrying cargo to and from all ports of the 2-11 world handled more than 77.6 million tons of cargo through the 2-12 port in 1994; and 2-13 WHEREAS, A regional cultural center, which enjoys having 2-14 the USS Lexington on the bay, Corpus Christi is the home of 2-15 the Texas State Aquarium, the Columbus Fleet, the Bayfront Arts 2-16 and Science Park, the Art Museum of South Texas, the Bayfront Plaza 2-17 Convention Center, and the Corpus Christi Museum of Science and 2-18 History, which houses the Spanish Shipwreck Collection; and 2-19 WHEREAS, Other attractions are the Harbor Playhouse, the 2-20 Corpus Christi Water Garden, the Texas Jazz Festival, one of the 2-21 longest-running jazz festivals in the country, Bayfest, the annual 2-22 family waterfront festival which attracts roughly 150,000 people 2-23 every year, and the Corpus Christi Greyhound Race Track; and 2-24 WHEREAS, The beauty of the Bay Area and Corpus Christi 2-25 continues to attract residents to the area; about 500,000 people 3-1 reside in this lovely community; now, therefore, be it 3-2 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-3 75th Legislature, hereby congratulate the people of Corpus Christi 3-4 and join them as they celebrate Corpus Christi Day on 3-5 February 19, 1997; and, be it further 3-6 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-7 the City of Corpus Christi to commemorate this splendid occasion. 3-8 Truan 3-9 Armbrister Galloway Ogden 3-10 Barrientos Harris Patterson 3-11 Bivins Haywood Ratliff 3-12 Brown Lindsay Shapiro 3-13 Cain Lucio Shapleigh 3-14 Carona Luna Sibley 3-15 Duncan Madla Wentworth 3-16 Ellis Moncrief West 3-17 Fraser Nelson Whitmire 3-18 Gallegos Nixon Zaffirini 3-19 Bullock, President of the Senate 3-20 ______________________________________ 3-21 President of the Senate 3-22 I hereby certify that the above 3-23 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-24 on February 19, 1997. 3-25 ______________________________________ 3-26 Secretary of the Senate 3-27 ______________________________________ 3-28 Dean of the Senate
