 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, On February 13, 1997, the prestigious Maxine Perini

 1-4     Award was presented to Ann White for outstanding achievement in

 1-5     historical preservation in Taylor County; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, The award was presented to Mrs. White by Maxine Perini,

 1-7     for whom the award is named; a 30-year veteran of the Taylor County

 1-8     Historical Commission, Mrs. Perini served as its chairman for five

 1-9     years from 1967 through 1971; and

1-10           WHEREAS, A retired speech and drama teacher at Madison Middle

1-11     School in Abilene, Ann White is a graduate of McMurry University

1-12     and taught for 29 years before retiring from the Abilene school

1-13     system in 1988; and

1-14           WHEREAS, Since her retirement, Mrs. White has devoted her

1-15     time and energies to the Taylor County Historical Commission for

1-16     the past six years; she did exhaustive research on the Thornton

1-17     family and the multi-store complex where the Thorntons sold

1-18     everything from farm equipment to women's and men's clothing; and

1-19           WHEREAS, After two years of hard work in which Ann played

1-20     a major part, she saw her labors rewarded when the historical

1-21     commission placed a historical marker on the site of the old

1-22     Thornton Department Store at South Fourth and Oak streets; and

1-23           WHEREAS, Dedicated to preserving the history of the area for

 2-1     all to appreciate, Mrs. White also led the effort to clean, restore,

 2-2     and paint more than half of Taylor County's 40 historical markers;

 2-3     and

 2-4           WHEREAS, Ann White is also a member of the board of directors

 2-5     of the museums of Abilene, graciously volunteering her time as a

 2-6     docent for museum activities; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, Her important work has resulted in the accumulation

 2-8     of extensive files and information on hundreds of items concerning

 2-9     the history of Taylor County, saving other researchers valuable time

2-10     and effort; now, therefore, be it

2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-12     75th Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to Ann White for

2-13     receiving the Maxine Perini Award and express its deep appreciation

2-14     to her for helping to preserve and protect valuable historical sites

2-15     and artifacts pertaining to the history of Taylor County; and, be

2-16     it further

2-17           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-18     Ann White as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
