No. 210 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to recognize Texas 1-4 Southern University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law on the 1-5 momentous occasion of its 50th anniversary on February 26, 1997; 1-6 and 1-7 WHEREAS, In February, 1947, when Heman Sweatt, an African 1-8 American, was denied admission to The University of Texas, the 1-9 state legislature created the Texas State University for Negroes, 1-10 now named Texas Southern University, and the law school opened 1-11 its doors; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Since the creation of the law school, it has played 1-13 an effective role in the community; Thurgood Marshall School of 1-14 Law provides professional and educational opportunities for people 1-15 of all backgrounds; and 1-16 WHEREAS, The law school is known by some in the legal 1-17 community as the most culturally diverse law school in the nation; 1-18 the Thurgood Marshall School of Law is actively involved in providing 1-19 legal assistance to poor individuals in the community through its 1-20 various clinical programs; and 1-21 WHEREAS, A true reflection of the people of Houston, the 1-22 Thurgood Marshall School of Law has diversity as an asset, making 1-23 it sensitive to the needs of the community; now, therefore, be it 2-1 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-2 75th Legislature, hereby commend and congratulate Texas Southern 2-3 University's Thurgood Marshall School of Law on its 50th anniversary; 2-4 and, be it further 2-5 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-6 the law school as an expression of the highest esteem and regard 2-7 of the Texas Senate. 2-8 ______________________________________ 2-9 President of the Senate 2-10 I hereby certify that the above 2-11 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-12 on February 19, 1997. 2-13 ______________________________________ 2-14 Secretary of the Senate 2-15 ______________________________________ 2-16 Member, Texas Senate
