No. 211 1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride 1-4 in recognizing Tracye Wear, who was recently selected for the 1-5 Bernard and Audre Rapoport Teaching Award; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The Bernard and Audre Rapoport Teaching Award is 1-7 one of the Texas Excellence Awards for Outstanding Teachers; the 1-8 awards are sponsored by the Ex-Students' Association and the 1-9 College of Education of The University of Texas at Austin; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Tracye Wear holds a master's degree in fine arts 1-11 from the University of Arkansas and has continued her education 1-12 throughout her career by attending classes at Rice University, 1-13 Texas Christian University, and the Advanced Placement Summer 1-14 Institute; and 1-15 WHEREAS, Formerly a teacher at Hartman Middle School, 1-16 Tracye Wear has served as an art and art history teacher at 1-17 Jesse Jones High School of the Houston Independent School 1-18 District since 1981; she teaches in both the regular program 1-19 and the Vanguard Program for the Academically Gifted and 1-20 Talented; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Devoted to her work, Tracye Wear has assisted 1-22 with a wide array of student activities over the years and has 1-23 distinguished herself in her profession; she often spends late 2-1 hours with her students visiting museums and attending events 2-2 that will help them to develop their love of art; and 2-3 WHEREAS, A beloved and respected teacher, Tracye expects 2-4 the best from her students and keeps her classroom filled with 2-5 the work her students produce and with a wide variety of supplies; 2-6 an artist herself, she is innovative and creative and focuses on 2-7 exposing her students to the higher-level thinking skills involved 2-8 in artistic expression; and 2-9 WHEREAS, She is best known for her highly successful 2-10 Junior Docent Program at the Houston Museum of Fine Arts; 2-11 created by Tracye in 1990, the program is a collaborative effort 2-12 by the Houston Museum of Fine Arts and the Jones High School Art 2-13 Department; students are trained to work as volunteer docents at 2-14 the museum; and 2-15 WHEREAS, The program helps to develop the students' 2-16 self-esteem and exposes them to culture and the meaningful works 2-17 of some of our most gifted artists; by working in the museum, 2-18 the students learn to transfer their academic knowledge to the 2-19 outside world and to make art and its history a significant part 2-20 of their lives; and 2-21 WHEREAS, In tribute to her outstanding work as a teacher, 2-22 Tracye Wear was named Teacher of the Year for the South Central 2-23 District of the Houston Independent School District, was the 2-24 recipient of the Elizabeth Brand Memorial Award, and was a 2-25 semifinalist for the National Art Education Association and 3-1 State Farm Insurance Companies Good Neighbor Award; and 3-2 WHEREAS, Tracye Wear's students greatly benefit from her 3-3 skillful teaching methods, her sincere concern for the individual, 3-4 and her wise counsel and encouragement; and 3-5 WHEREAS, A dedicated and resourceful artist and teacher, 3-6 she instills in her students an appreciation of hard work and a 3-7 love of challenge and learning; now, therefore, be it 3-8 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-9 75th Legislature, hereby commend Tracye Wear on her exceptional 3-10 career and many accomplishments and extend to her congratulations 3-11 on earning the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Teaching Award; and, be 3-12 it further 3-13 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 3-14 her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 3-15 ______________________________________ 3-16 President of the Senate 3-17 I hereby certify that the above 3-18 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-19 on February 19, 1997. 3-20 ______________________________________ 3-21 Secretary of the Senate 3-22 ______________________________________ 3-23 Member, Texas Senate
