 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great

 1-4     pleasure in recognizing Mrs. Jimmie Tyler Brashear for her many

 1-5     years of contributions to the educational system of Dallas and

 1-6     to the State of Texas; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Born on July 2, 1903, in Lexington, Kentucky,

 1-8     Mrs. Brashear was the granddaughter of slaves; her parents, a

 1-9     teacher and a barber, stressed the importance of education; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Sent to live with an aunt in Madison, Wisconsin,

1-11     Jimmie was able to take advantage of the city's better schools;

1-12     and

1-13           WHEREAS, The only African American in her graduating class,

1-14     Mrs. Brashear graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1924;

1-15     and

1-16           WHEREAS, Hired by the Dallas school district in 1929, she

1-17     was the school district's first African American administrator

1-18     above the level of principal; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Mrs. Brashear was the only black female instructional

1-20     supervisor in Texas for many years; many of her former protegees

1-21     who went into education are now retired; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Highly respected, Mrs. Brashear is the only living

1-23     person for whom a Dallas public school is named; the

 2-1     Jimmie Tyler Brashear Early Childhood Center serves children

 2-2     three to five years old; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, This distinguished gentlewoman earned two master's

 2-4     degrees, and she taught at Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and at

 2-5     Prairie View A&M University before she began working for Dallas

 2-6     schools; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, Retiring in 1967 at age 64, Mrs. Brashear had

 2-8     spent 38 years as an educator with the Dallas schools; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, A woman of strength and high moral character,

2-10     she taught at Bishop College after her retirement from the

2-11     public school system; and

2-12           WHEREAS, It is indeed fitting and appropriate that the

2-13     Texas Senate join the citizens of Dallas and the Dallas Independent

2-14     School District in paying tribute to Mrs. Brashear for her countless

2-15     achievements in the field of education; now, therefore, be it

2-16           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-17     75th Legislature, hereby commend Mrs. Jimmie Tyler Brashear for

2-18     her superlative service on behalf of the schoolchildren of Texas;

2-19     and, be it further

2-20           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-21     her as an expression of the highest esteem and regard of the

2-22     Texas Senate.
