 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION
 1-3           WHEREAS, March 4, 1997, has been designated Jasper Day at the
 1-4     State Capitol, and the Texas Senate is pleased to join the citizens
 1-5     of Jasper in honoring their city's important contributions to the
 1-6     culture and economy of our state; and
 1-7           WHEREAS, Nicknamed "The Jewel of the Forest," Jasper is the
 1-8     county seat of Jasper County, one of the original 23 counties
 1-9     created by the Republic of Texas; the city was named in honor of
1-10     Sergeant William Jasper, a hero of the American Revolutionary War;
1-11     and
1-12           WHEREAS, The slogans adopted for the community,
1-13     "Something for Everyone," "All Roads Lead to Jasper," and the
1-14     "Lure of East Texas," depict the pride of its residents; and
1-15           WHEREAS, Jasper truly has "Something for Everyone" with
1-16     world-class fishing at Sam Rayburn Reservoir and B. A. Steinhagen
1-17     Lake; year-round festivals and activities such as "Christmas on the
1-18     Square," the "Azalea Trail," and "Fall Fest" attract residents of
1-19     the Lone Star State to this picturesque area; and
1-20           WHEREAS, Nestled in the piney woods of East Texas, Jasper
1-21     is ideally situated near the Big Thicket National Preserve and is
1-22     home to Martin Dies, Jr., State Park; it was recently named one
1-23     of the "Top Ten Sporting Towns in the United States" by Outdoor
 2-1     Life Magazine; and
 2-2           WHEREAS, Jasper enjoys a diverse economy based on timber,
 2-3     oil and gas production, and agricultural products; the area has
 2-4     experienced rapid growth in recent years, and the citizens of
 2-5     Jasper pursue economic prosperity while protecting the pristine
 2-6     environment that makes Jasper an exceptional place to live; and
 2-7           WHEREAS, Noted for their friendliness and hospitality, the
 2-8     residents of Jasper have worked hard to make their lovely town one
 2-9     of the most productive in East Texas, and they are truly deserving
2-10     of legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it
2-11           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
2-12     75th Legislature, hereby recognize March 4, 1997, as Jasper Day
2-13     at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to its citizens for a
2-14     most enjoyable and fun-filled day; and, be it further
2-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
2-16     the City of Jasper as an expression of the high regard of the
2-17     Texas Senate.
