 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, Tuesday, February 25, Panola County Day will be

 1-4     celebrated by the proud citizens of Panola County in recognition

 1-5     of their illustrious county and its contributions to the

 1-6     State of Texas; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Located on the Texas-Louisiana line, Panola County

 1-8     is blessed with rich soil and an abundant water supply; a leading

 1-9     broiler-producing county, hogs and cattle are also raised here; and

1-10           WHEREAS, The name Panola comes from the Indian word for

1-11     cotton, ponolo; the area is famous for its production of cotton,

1-12     corn, potatoes, sugar cane, peanuts, tomatoes, melons, and peaches,

1-13     and other fruits and vegetables; and

1-14           WHEREAS, The county was created from Harrison and Shelby

1-15     counties by Texas' First Legislature on March 30, 1846; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Carthage is the county seat; it dates back to 1848

1-17     when 100 acres were donated for a town site; a lively small town,

1-18     it is the trade center for the region, and its population approaches

1-19     7,000; and

1-20           WHEREAS, The local employment pool consists of dedicated and

1-21     hardworking men and women; employment opportunities abound with

1-22     retail and service-oriented businesses, specialty shops, commercial

1-23     food processing, timber, light manufacturing, and oil and gas

 2-1     processing; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, Potlatch, an annual community event held every

 2-3     fall, salutes the county's country heritage and attracts visitors

 2-4     who revel in the goodwill, crafts, country spirit, enjoyable music

 2-5     from jazz to gospel, and sumptuous regional food; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, In 1944, the Jordan well was drilled and was the

 2-7     largest gas condensate reserve in the United States; the county is

 2-8     abundantly rich in natural resources; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, The county is the birthplace of Country Music Hall

2-10     of Famers Jim Reeves and Tex Ritter; and

2-11           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is proud to honor the residents

2-12     of this important county and to recognize their invaluable

2-13     contributions to the State of Texas; and

2-14           WHEREAS, The important achievements of the citizens of

2-15     Panola County have contributed to the development of the

2-16     State of Texas, and these industrious Texans are truly worthy

2-17     of legislative recognition and praise; now, therefore, be it

2-18           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-19     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere best wishes to

2-20     Panola County for a most successful and happy Panola County

2-21     Day; and, be it further

2-22           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-23     Panola County as a memento of this grand occasion and as an

2-24     expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
