 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, On February 26, 1997, many proud residents of

 1-4     Navarro County will gather in Austin to celebrate Navarro County

 1-5     Day at the State Capitol, and this festive event is a fitting

 1-6     opportunity to extol the many virtues of the area; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Sprawling across more than 1,000 square miles

 1-8     of gently rolling prairie and woodland, Navarro County is a rich

 1-9     repository of both abundant natural resources and colorful Texas

1-10     history, and the county's fortunate inhabitants take justifiable

1-11     satisfaction in these assets; and

1-12           WHEREAS, Originally inhabited by Native American tribes,

1-13     including Iones, Kickapoos, and Comanches, Navarro County was

1-14     founded in 1846, and the cotton, tobacco, and produce crops that

1-15     covered the area quickly established it as a center for

1-16     agricultural trade; and

1-17           WHEREAS, In 1894, Corsicana city employees drilling for

1-18     water hit oil instead, and petroleum replaced peaches and pecans

1-19     as the region's preeminent export; since that time manufacturing,

1-20     construction, and food processing have also taken their places

1-21     as mainstays of the local economy, and the area's many attributes

1-22     continue to attract new industry and investment; and

1-23           WHEREAS, Residents of Navarro County revel in their

 2-1     multifaceted cultural heritage, and this appreciation of their

 2-2     roots is reflected in such area attractions as Corsicana's

 2-3     Pioneer Village, a historical recreation of a 19th-century

 2-4     town; the Gaston C. Gooch Library, which houses a collection

 2-5     of over 44,000 pieces of Native American art that is among the

 2-6     finest of its kind; and the Lefty Frizzell Country Music Museum,

 2-7     dedicated to the life and art of local hero and country music

 2-8     legend Lefty Frizzell; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, The region is also a sportsman's paradise,

2-10     boasting outstanding fishing and boating on Richland-Chambers

2-11     Lake and Navarro Mills Lake, while less athletically inclined

2-12     visitors may sample the internationally famous Corsicana

2-13     fruitcake that has been the pride of Collin Street Bakery

2-14     for over a century; and

2-15           WHEREAS, Navarro County has always been characterized

2-16     by its dynamic and forward-thinking citizenry, and even as these

2-17     notable Texans look with pride on the region's past, they eagerly

2-18     await the challenges and opportunities of the years to come; now,

2-19     therefore, be it

2-20           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-21     75th Legislature, hereby recognize February 26, 1997, as Navarro

2-22     County Day at the State Capitol and extend a warm welcome to the

2-23     Navarro County delegation; and, be it further

2-24           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be

2-25     prepared for the members of the Navarro County delegation as an

 3-1     expression of high regard by the Texas Senate.
