 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is honored to

 1-4     pay tribute to Anice Barber Read for her lifelong contributions

 1-5     to the State of Texas; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, Mrs. Read's interest in preservation of historic

 1-7     landmarks began when she volunteered in her hometown of Fort Worth

 1-8     for various projects; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Governor John B. Connally recognized her

1-10     effectiveness and appointed her to the Texas Historical

1-11     Commission in 1969, where she served honorably for seven years;

1-12     and

1-13           WHEREAS, When her term was finished, Mrs. Read was

1-14     persuaded to accept a staff position; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Her primary project was to complete the Texas

1-16     application for selection for the Main Street revitalization

1-17     program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation; and

1-18           WHEREAS, Because of her dedication to this effort,

1-19     the application was successful, and Texas became a charter

1-20     participant in this innovative community initiative; Mrs. Read

1-21     became the first Main Street Program Director, and since that

1-22     time she has successfully encouraged attempts by other

1-23     communities with the help of a number of first ladies of

 2-1     Texas; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, This outstanding gentlewoman is well known

 2-3     for her chocolate cakes, which have become a famous incentive

 2-4     to further her goals; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Because of her dedicated leadership, inexhaustible

 2-6     determination, and boundless enthusiasm, the State of Texas has

 2-7     gained national recognition for its superiority in working with

 2-8     these programs; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, Celebrated for her integrity and honesty,

2-10     Anice Read has served as an excellent role model for many young

2-11     Main Street managers; and

2-12           WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Mrs. Read has been

2-13     supported by her loving family:  her husband, Julian Read; her

2-14     daughters, Courtney Hoffman and Ellen Read; and her grandchildren,

2-15     Faye Hoffman, Kathryn Hoffman, and Read Hoffman; now, therefore,

2-16     be it

2-17           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-18     75th Legislature, hereby honor Anice Barber Read and express

2-19     its gratitude to her for her significant contributions to the

2-20     heritage of the State of Texas; and, be it further

2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared

2-22     as an expression of the highest regard and esteem of the

2-23     Texas Senate.
