 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure

 1-4     in recognizing Willie Lee Campbell Glass for her exceptional

 1-5     contributions to the field of education for more than 60 years;

 1-6     and

 1-7           WHEREAS, The esteemed educator has spent her adult

 1-8     life nurturing and guiding countless young people during their

 1-9     formative years and has earned the respect and admiration of

1-10     students and colleagues alike; and

1-11           WHEREAS, Born in Nacogdoches, Texas, on August 24, 1910,

1-12     Willie Lee is the beloved daughter of two well-known educators,

1-13     E. J. and Mary Kennedy Campbell, who instilled in their only child

1-14     valuable lessons that the young girl carried with her all her

1-15     life; and

1-16           WHEREAS, After graduating from E. J. Campbell High School

1-17     that was named for her father, Willie Lee attended Prairie View

1-18     A&M College, where she earned a bachelor of science degree; she

1-19     continued her education at Iowa State College and at age 21 became

1-20     the youngest student to acquire a master's degree from the school;

1-21     she also attended Columbia University, Union Theological Seminary,

1-22     and the University of Wisconsin; and

1-23           WHEREAS, She began her long and fruitful relationship

 2-1     with Texas College in 1936, the same year she was married to

 2-2     the president of that institution, Dr. Dominion R. Glass; as wife

 2-3     of the president, Mrs. Glass became a positive role model for the

 2-4     students who lived on campus; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Mrs. Glass followed the examples of her parents

 2-6     in teaching her students to be proud of who they were, thereby

 2-7     building their self-esteem; her encouragement and ability to

 2-8     see the potential in each child helped them to develop a

 2-9     desire to achieve; and

2-10           WHEREAS, During the course of her notable career, she

2-11     has served as chairman of the Home Economics Department at

2-12     Texas College, Tyler Junior College, and Prairie View A&M

2-13     College and has shared her knowledge as a consultant and

2-14     supervisor for the State Department of Education and the

2-15     Texas Education Agency; and

2-16           WHEREAS, Dedicated to educating children of all social,

2-17     economic, and ethnic groups, Willie Lee Glass is presently

2-18     serving as vice chairman of the North Tyler Day Nursery

2-19     Association; her devotion to education has been hailed by

2-20     state and national groups; the first African-American

2-21     recipient of the T. B. Butler Award in 1986, she was elected

2-22     to the Dallas Negro Hall of Fame and the Texas Woman's Hall

2-23     of Fame in 1985 for outstanding civic leadership; now,

2-24     therefore, be it

2-25           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 3-1     75th Legislature, hereby commend Willie Lee Glass for her notable

 3-2     achievements in the lives of the youth of Texas College and the

 3-3     Tyler community; and, be it further

 3-4           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

 3-5     her as a token of the admiration of the Texas Senate.
