 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in

 1-4     recognizing the African American Program of the American Diabetes

 1-5     Association on the occasion of its inauguration on March 6, 1997;

 1-6     and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association

 1-8     is the nation's leading voluntary health organization in support of

 1-9     diabetes research information; the organization created the African

1-10     American Program in response to the continuing rise in the number

1-11     of African Americans developing diabetes; and

1-12           WHEREAS, The rate of African Americans developing diabetes

1-13     has tripled since the 1960s, and today nearly three million African

1-14     Americans have diabetes; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Diabetes is the leading cause of adult-age

1-16     blindness, kidney failure, and amputation, complications that affect

1-17     African Americans to a greater degree than the general population;

1-18     and

1-19           WHEREAS, The start of the Dallas "Change for the C.U.R.E."

1-20     Program brings together leaders of the African American community,

1-21     churches, health agencies, and corporations dedicated to fighting

1-22     diabetes through national and local outreach efforts; and

1-23           WHEREAS, The African American Program, which is being

 2-1     launched March 6, will be a tremendous help in informing the African

 2-2     American community and others of the dangers of diabetes and of the

 2-3     assistance and education that is available to the public; now,

 2-4     therefore, be it

 2-5           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-6     75th Legislature, hereby commend the American Diabetes Association

 2-7     on its creation of the African American Program and extend best

 2-8     wishes for success in its project; and, be it further

 2-9           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-10     the inauguration of this program as an expression of esteem from

2-11     the Texas Senate.
