No. 307 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION 1-3 WHEREAS, The University of Texas at Arlington and the Office 1-4 of Student Publications will sorely miss the wisdom and expertise 1-5 of Dorothy Estes, who retired in August, 1996, after years of 1-6 superb service; and 1-7 WHEREAS, An exemplary university employee, this distinguished 1-8 lady has handled her responsibilities with exceptional dedication; 1-9 and 1-10 WHEREAS, Director of student publications, Mrs. Estes became 1-11 the mother and father figure of a generation of students; she was 1-12 much more than just a journalism advisor; and 1-13 WHEREAS, In the 1970s, she became the first woman to become 1-14 head of The University of Texas at Arlington's student publications 1-15 and serve as advisor to The Shorthorn; and 1-16 WHEREAS, Well known in journalism circles, Dorothy Estes 1-17 brought the paper into the modern age of technology by pushing for 1-18 funding to expand its equipment, services, and facilities; and 1-19 WHEREAS, As an illustration of the Estes influence, this past 1-20 year The Shorthorn earned 157 collegiate awards for its coverage of 1-21 the university and surrounding communities; and 1-22 WHEREAS, Insisting on her students' adherence to the highest 1-23 ethical standards, she taught them to take pride in their 2-1 profession; she is responsible for producing countless numbers of 2-2 professional journalists; and 2-3 WHEREAS, Noted for her honesty and integrity, Dorothy Estes 2-4 has earned the respect and friendship of her colleagues; and 2-5 WHEREAS, During Dorothy's tenure, The Shorthorn went from 2-6 being one of the best student publications in the state to being 2-7 one of the best in the nation; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Mrs. Estes became well known for her excellent 2-9 organizational skills, her dependability, and her reliable 2-10 judgment; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Dorothy Estes looks forward to her retirement, 2-12 planting flower gardens, spending more time with her grandchildren, 2-13 and traveling to Greece, Italy, Africa, and South America; now, 2-14 therefore, be it 2-15 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-16 75th Legislature, hereby commend Dorothy Estes on her countless 2-17 contributions to her community and state and extend best wishes to 2-18 her for a rich and rewarding retirement; and, be it further 2-19 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be 2-20 prepared for Mrs. Estes as an expression of the highest regard of 2-21 the Texas Senate. 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 President of the Senate 2-24 I hereby certify that the above 2-25 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-26 on March 17, 1997. 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 Secretary of the Senate 2-29 ______________________________________ 3-1 Member, Texas Senate
