 1-5                               Clem B. Boverie

 1-6           WHEREAS, The passing of Clem B. Boverie on October 12, 1996,

 1-7     at the age of 91, has brought a profound loss to this remarkable

 1-8     man's family and many friends and to the whole community of

 1-9     Lubbock; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Born in 1905 to C. B. and Rebecca Boverie in

1-11     Aberdeen, Texas, the eighth of 10 children, young Clem was raised

1-12     in Wellington, where he developed an appreciation for hard work,

1-13     an enthusiasm for farming, and a humanitarian spirit, and where he

1-14     graduated from high school; and

1-15           WHEREAS, After attending Draughon's Business School in

1-16     Fort Worth, the young man moved to Lubbock in 1928 to enroll at

1-17     Texas Tech; electing to apply for part-time work to avoid a long

1-18     registration line and finding the only position available at

1-19     Clarence Saunders Food Store to be full-time, he intended to

1-20     enroll at Tech the following semester, and although he never

1-21     attended Tech, he was a faithful supporter of the university

1-22     for the rest of his life; and

1-23           WHEREAS, The Saunders Food Store was purchased by "M"

 2-1     Systems, and in 1929 it was in turn purchased by Roy Furr,

 2-2     with whom Mr. Boverie developed a close personal and business

 2-3     relationship that lasted until Mr. Furr's death; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, Mr. Boverie began as a grocery sacker and advanced

 2-5     in his 50 years in the Furr chain to store manager, sales manager

 2-6     of the Lubbock division, president of Furr Food Stores,

 2-7     Incorporated, of Amarillo, senior vice president of Furr Food

 2-8     Stores, and president of Farm Pac Kitchens, Incorporated, and,

 2-9     finally, to chairman of the board of Furr's, Incorporated, and

2-10     chairman of the executive committee of Furr's Cafeterias,

2-11     Incorporated; and

2-12           WHEREAS, In addition to achieving remarkable success in his

2-13     business activities, he was actively involved in a wide variety

2-14     of civic and humanitarian activities and organizations; he served

2-15     as president of the Lubbock Lions Club, which in 1962 grew to be

2-16     the largest Lions Club in the nation and held that distinction

2-17     for more than 15 years; he also made important contributions as

2-18     president and chairman of the United Way, president and board

2-19     member of Goodwill Industries of Lubbock, president of the West

2-20     Texas Museum Association, trustee and secretary-treasurer of

2-21     Lubbock Christian University, first chairman of the Coaches

2-22     All-American Game, vice president of the Lubbock Symphony,

2-23     Advisory Council chairman and board member of the Children's Home

2-24     of Lubbock, vice president and board member of the Red Raider Club,

2-25     member of the President's Council at Texas Tech, and board member

 3-1     of the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce, Airport Board, Red Cross,

 3-2     Camp Fire Girls, Young Men's Christian Association, Lubbock Day

 3-3     Care Association, Southwest Guidance Center, Methodist Hospital,

 3-4     and Junior League Emergency Center; and

 3-5           WHEREAS, In 1977 he was named "Mr. United Way" for more

 3-6     than 30 years of service, presented an award by Methodist Hospital

 3-7     for work on eight different hospital committees, recognized as a

 3-8     life member of the District 2-T2 Lions Eye Bank, congratulated in

 3-9     a proclamation read on behalf of more than 45,000 Lions Club

3-10     members throughout the state, and named "Sales Executive of the

3-11     Year" by the Sales Association of Lubbock; in 1984 he received

3-12     the Servant Leadership Award of Lubbock Christian University; in

3-13     1989 he received the Lions Club Presidential Award; in 1995 he

3-14     and his beloved wife, Estelle, received the Alexis de Tocqueville

3-15     Award from the United Way and the "Friend of the Child" Award from

3-16     the Children's Home of Lubbock; and in 1996 Keep Lubbock Beautiful

3-17     honored him with the planting of the Clem B. Boverie Grove; and

3-18           WHEREAS, On February 22, 1936, he became the husband of

3-19     Estelle Griffin, beginning a long and rewarding marriage and a

3-20     true partnership; during their happy years together they reared

3-21     three children and enjoyed the company and affection of their

3-22     grandchildren, great-granddaughter, and many friends and relatives,

3-23     to whom he exhibited unfailing love and loyalty; and

3-24           WHEREAS, Mr. Boverie worked daily to the very end of his

3-25     life, contributed his time and talents to many civic organizations

 4-1     and to his church with energy and enthusiasm, and was actively

 4-2     involved in his farms and investments; and

 4-3           WHEREAS, During his long and fruitful life, Clem Boverie

 4-4     was a source of happiness to those around him; worked hard and

 4-5     productively both as a businessman and as a volunteer; saw the

 4-6     best in everyone he knew and worked enthusiastically to make his

 4-7     community better; exhibited integrity, generosity, and joy in all

 4-8     his activities; and brightened the lives of countless individuals

 4-9     who have benefited by personal contact with him or by his many

4-10     good works; and

4-11           WHEREAS, Because of his open, warmhearted, positive approach

4-12     to life, to work, and, above all, to his fellow man, Clem Boverie's

4-13     unique spirit will long endure in the hearts of those who knew him

4-14     and in the community he loved and served; now, therefore, be it

4-15           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

4-16     75th Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Clem B. Boverie

4-17     and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family:  his

4-18     wife, Estelle Boverie; his son, Robert Boverie; his daughters,

4-19     Glenda Boverie and Nita Shuffler; and to all the relatives and

4-20     friends of this beloved gentlemen; and, be it further

4-21           RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be

4-22     prepared for the members of his family as an expression of

4-23     deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate

4-24     adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Clem B. Boverie.
