 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pleasure in

 1-4     honoring Friendship Missionary Baptist Church which has faithfully

 1-5     fulfilled its mission to its congregation for more than five

 1-6     decades; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Organized in 1940 by a group of dedicated Christian

 1-8     men and women, Friendship Missionary Baptist Church has grown from

 1-9     18 to 215 members; the church first met twice a month in a building

1-10     leased for three years from one of the members, until land could

1-11     be purchased and the building relocated in 1945; and

1-12           WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Pastor Calvin Miller, a

1-13     new church building was constructed in 1949, and the congregation

1-14     continued to grow; a cafeteria was added to the building, and

1-15     weekly Sunday services were held during the tenure of

1-16     Reverend Sanders Alix, who served the church for 14 years; and

1-17           WHEREAS, Through the years the sanctuary was refurnished

1-18     and modernized to meet the needs of the congregation, and in 1985

1-19     the building was renovated; and

1-20           WHEREAS, As Friendship Missionary Baptist Church continued

1-21     to flourish, additional land was purchased, and in 1994 plans

1-22     were made to erect a new sanctuary; and

1-23           WHEREAS, To celebrate the congregation's entrance into its

 2-1     new sanctuary, a dedication service was held on January 7, 1996;

 2-2     and

 2-3           WHEREAS, Friendship Missionary Baptist Church has been a

 2-4     source of comfort and hope in times of great distress and a place of

 2-5     fellowship and love to those who come to worship; now, therefore,

 2-6     be it

 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-8     75th Legislature, hereby recognize Friendship Missionary Baptist

 2-9     Church and extend best wishes to Pastor J. Amos Jones and the

2-10     congregation for continued success in their future endeavors;

2-11     and, be it further

2-12           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an

2-13     expression of the admiration of the Texas Senate.
