 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate is pleased to welcome the members

 1-4     of the Student Advisory Committee of Senator Royce West as they

 1-5     come to the State Capitol to observe Student Day on Thursday,

 1-6     March 20, 1997; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Comprised of junior high and high school students

 1-8     who are leaders of student council and student class governments,

 1-9     the Student Advisory Committee includes young people from the

1-10     Dallas, Duncanville, DeSoto, Grand Prairie, Cedar Hill,

1-11     Wilmer-Hutchins, and Lancaster school districts; and

1-12           WHEREAS, Formed in the spring of 1996, the Student Advisory

1-13     Committee has three primary goals:  to discover the students'

1-14     perspective on legislative issues; to participate in community

1-15     volunteerism; and to help students build leadership skills as well

1-16     as giving them access to leaders from across the state; and

1-17           WHEREAS, The Student Advisory Committee has already

1-18     accomplished a great deal; in October, 1996, more than 80 students

1-19     visited eight nursing homes in District 23, giving the students the

1-20     opportunity to visit with senior citizens; and

1-21           WHEREAS, In November, 1996, 10 high schools helped The

1-22     Children's Hope Foundation by collecting more than 500 new clothing

1-23     items for homeless children; in December, 1996, elected officials

 2-1     and students met to discuss issues that affect District 23; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, Southwestern Bell Telephone Company invited a

 2-3     select few from the Student Advisory Committee to a dinner to

 2-4     learn information from the students about drop-out issues and how

 2-5     corporations such as Southwestern Bell can assist in fighting the

 2-6     trend to drop out; now, therefore, be it

 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-8     75th Legislature, hereby commend the members of the Student Advisory

 2-9     Committee and wish them continued success in their endeavors; and,

2-10     be it further

2-11           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-12     committee as an expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
