 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in

 1-4     paying tribute to the life of Captain Edward T. Broughton and to

 1-5     the lives of the Johnson Guards on the occasion of the dedication

 1-6     of a historical marker in their honor on March 16, 1997; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, The members of the Confederate Rose Chapter 2548

 1-8     of the United Daughters of the Confederacy are sponsoring this

 1-9     historical marker dedication to honor the bravery of these men

1-10     and to educate the public regarding Confederate history; and

1-11           WHEREAS, In 1861, supporters of the Confederate cause

1-12     banded together to form the Kaufman Light Infantry; they

1-13     gathered in Prairieville that September under the command of

1-14     Captain Edward T. Broughton, a district attorney who resided

1-15     in the area; and

1-16           WHEREAS, The men renamed themselves the Johnson Guards

1-17     in honor of some prominent local merchants, and the company

1-18     joined Company C of Colonel John Gregg's 7th Regiment of Texas

1-19     Volunteers; and

1-20           WHEREAS, The Johnson Guards served the Confederacy with

1-21     distinction, and Captain Broughton became known for his remarkable

1-22     bravery when he twice returned to his unit after having been taken

1-23     prisoner by Union forces; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, Captain Broughton is especially remembered today

 2-2     for his courage at the bloody battle of Franklin, Tennessee, when,

 2-3     though wounded, he assumed command of his regiment after his

 2-4     superior officers were killed; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Exemplary soldiers, Captain Broughton and the

 2-6     Johnson Guards are part of Texas' colorful past, and they should

 2-7     be commemorated for their valor, their perseverance, and their

 2-8     contributions to the Confederate cause; now, therefore, be it

 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-10     75th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the Confederate Rose

2-11     Chapter 2548 for continued success in its historical preservation

2-12     efforts and commemorate the dedication ceremony of the historical

2-13     marker for Captain Edward T. Broughton and the Johnson Guards; and,

2-14     be it further

2-15           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-16     the members of the Confederate Rose Chapter 2548 as an expression

2-17     of esteem from the Texas Senate.
