 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, March 18, 1997, has been designated as Conrad Intern

 1-4     Day at the State Capitol honoring the Dr. Emmett J. Conrad

 1-5     Leadership Program interns, sponsors, and advisory committee

 1-6     members; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Established in May, 1993, by State Senator Royce West

 1-8     through a partnership with Paul Quinn College and the Texas

 1-9     Veterans' Land Board, the program was designed to assist Paul Quinn

1-10     College students acquire paid employment experience in their majors

1-11     or fields of interest; and

1-12           WHEREAS, Since its beginning, the leadership program has

1-13     expanded to include any qualified college student residing in

1-14     District 23; sponsor employers have increased from one to 87

1-15     corporations and agencies; the number of students has grown from 27

1-16     in August, 1993, to more than 156 in 1996; to date, more than 400

1-17     students have participated in the program; and

1-18           WHEREAS, By actively participating in internships that

1-19     provide them with viable employment experience corresponding to

1-20     their majors and educational accomplishments, the students will

1-21     expand their employment marketability, career choices, and

1-22     leadership capabilities; and

1-23           WHEREAS, The highly successful program was named in honor of

 2-1     Dallas African American physician, civic leader, and education

 2-2     advocate Dr. Emmett J. Conrad, who was committed to equal and

 2-3     accessible education for all students; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, The first African American elected to the Board of

 2-5     Trustees of the Dallas Independent School District, Dr. Conrad was

 2-6     serving his third term on the Texas State Board of Education at the

 2-7     time of his death and his widow, Mrs. Eleanor Conrad, served out

 2-8     his term; his wife and daughter, Dr. Cecilia Conrad, are staunch

 2-9     supporters and patrons of the intern program; and

2-10           WHEREAS, Under the tireless dedication of the chairman of the

2-11     Advisory Committee, Mr. Brooks Fitch, the program has been able to

2-12     expand to the high level of success it has attained in the past

2-13     four years; now, therefore, be it

2-14           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-15     75th Legislature, hereby commend all those who have made the

2-16     Dr. Emmett J. Conrad Leadership Program such an outstanding

2-17     opportunity for deserving students; and, be it further

2-18           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for this

2-19     distinguished group as an expression of the appreciation and high

2-20     regard of the Texas Senate.
