 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to

 1-4     recognize Greater Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church of Houston,

 1-5     Texas, on the grand occasion of its 31st anniversary which is being

 1-6     celebrated March 23, 1997; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, The Greater Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church

 1-8     originated on March 13, 1966, when a small group of disciples met

 1-9     to discuss the establishment of a new church and agreed upon a

1-10     name; on March 24, 1966, the church was organized in a facility

1-11     on the Eastex Freeway and was later moved to a facility on Jensen;

1-12     and

1-13           WHEREAS, On October 17, 1966, the Reverend Wilbert Leo Daniels

1-14     was installed as the first pastor; he became noted for his help to

1-15     the sick and shut-ins and for initiating the Home Ministry; his dream

1-16     of constructing a home for the elderly and handicapped was realized

1-17     after his death under the guidance of Reverend C. D. Daniels, Jr.;

1-18     and

1-19           WHEREAS, The W. Leo Daniels Tower was dedicated in 1979, the

1-20     sanctuary was renovated in 1980, and the church underwent major

1-21     renovations in 1988 and 1989; and

1-22           WHEREAS, Over the years, the Greater Jerusalem Missionary

1-23     Baptist Church has ministered faithfully to the spiritual needs of

 2-1     innumerable Christians; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, Due to the guidance and wise stewardship of its

 2-3     pastors, and the outstanding leadership of its current pastor,

 2-4     the church has continued to grow and to undertake many worthy

 2-5     projects within the Houston community; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, The Greater Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church has

 2-7     become an invaluable source of strength for church members during

 2-8     their hardships and in times of bereavement; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, The celebration of its 31st anniversary is an

2-10     expression of the church's enduring commitment to its holy mission

2-11     and its dedication to tradition and unity among Christians; now,

2-12     therefore, be it

2-13           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-14     75th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the clergy and

2-15     members of Greater Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church on the

2-16     jubilant occasion of its 31st anniversary; and, be it further

2-17           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-18     the church as a token of esteem from the Texas Senate.
