 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in

 1-4     recognizing the members of the Texas Dietetic Association on the

 1-5     occasion of their visit to the Capitol on Wednesday, March 19, 1997,

 1-6     in celebration of March as National Nutrition Month; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Sound nutrition is the primary component of

 1-8     individual health, and medical nutrition therapy can curtail a

 1-9     wide variety of illnesses and diseases and promote recovery from

1-10     injuries; and

1-11           WHEREAS, Medical nutrition therapy is a cost-effective

1-12     medium of health care, reducing the incidence of low-birth weight

1-13     babies and lowering the cost of prenatal care for high-risk

1-14     indigent expectant mothers; and

1-15           WHEREAS, Licensed and registered dietitians serve a vital

1-16     role in our state as members of health care teams who work with

1-17     physicians and other professionals to provide high-quality health

1-18     care to our citizens; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Many of the leading causes of death in America are

1-20     related to diet, including heart disease, stroke, certain types of

1-21     cancer, kidney disease, and diabetes; nutritional assessment and

1-22     counseling help to reduce the incidence of these diseases and to

1-23     improve the conditions of people who are suffering from these

 2-1     maladies; and

 2-2           WHEREAS, National Nutrition Month provides an opportunity for

 2-3     citizens across our state to educate themselves regarding nutrition

 2-4     and the major role it plays in our lives and to express appreciation

 2-5     to those who work in that field for their hard work and many

 2-6     accomplishments; now, therefore, be it

 2-7           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

 2-8     75th Legislature, hereby commend the Texas Dietetic Association for

 2-9     its dedication to the field of nutrition and to helping the citizens

2-10     of our state and encourage all Texans to join with this beneficial

2-11     organization in celebrating March of 1997 as National Nutrition

2-12     Month; and, be it further

2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-14     Texas Dietetic Association as an expression of esteem from the

2-15     Texas Senate.
