 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, Dr. Shirley Wesley King has been selected as Woman

 1-4     of the Year for 1997 by the Kappa Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta,

 1-5     and the Texas Senate is pleased to extend congratulations to her

 1-6     for receiving this significant honor; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, A noted educator and community activist, Dr. King

 1-8     has worked diligently to improve the quality of life for the

 1-9     citizens in her community, and she is to be commended for her

1-10     selfless dedication; and

1-11           WHEREAS, For over 15 years Dr. King has generously

1-12     contributed her time and expertise to assist in specialized

1-13     areas; a staunch supporter of Creative Services for the Elderly,

1-14     Incorporated, since its founding, she has helped by writing

1-15     grants and serving as an all-around advocate; and

1-16           WHEREAS, Associate dean and professor in the School of

1-17     Social Work at The University of Texas at Arlington, she has over

1-18     20 years of practical experience as a university educator and

1-19     administrator, program and budget developer and manager, grant

1-20     specialist, analyst, evaluator, and conference planner; and

1-21           WHEREAS, A native of Birmingham, Alabama, she received a

1-22     bachelor of arts degree in sociology/psychology from Spelman

1-23     College in Atlanta; she continued her education at the University

 2-1     of Pittsburgh, where she obtained a master's degree in social work

 2-2     specializing in administration and research, and earned her doctor

 2-3     of philosophy in social work at Washington University in

 2-4     Saint Louis; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Dr. King began her career in Dallas as a health

 2-6     planner with the Community Council of Greater Dallas; she has

 2-7     served as a volunteer with Dallas Healthy Start since its

 2-8     creation and promoted a community forum to introduce the concept

 2-9     to Nolan Estes Plaza residents; and

2-10           WHEREAS, Dr. King is a popular keynote speaker and has been

2-11     the talk show participant for numerous professional presentations

2-12     on local, state, and national levels, addressing various

2-13     community issues; and

2-14           WHEREAS, An active churchgoer, she is a member of the choir,

2-15     a training teacher, and president of her Sunday school class at

2-16     Saint John Missionary Baptist Church; and

2-17           WHEREAS, Married to Dr. Gosby King, Jr., Shirley is the

2-18     mother of two children, Melanie and Wesley, and participates in

2-19     their activities through her work with Top Teens of America,

2-20     Incorporated, and as a Girl Scout troop leader; and

2-21           WHEREAS, Her community is the richer for having such a

2-22     dynamic and personable individual who is devoted to helping others;

2-23     now, therefore, be it

2-24           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-25     75th Legislature, hereby express its appreciation to

 3-1     Dr. Shirley Wesley King for her notable accomplishments and

 3-2     designate Saturday, March 22, 1997, Dr. Shirley Wesley King Day;

 3-3     and, be it further

 3-4           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her

 3-5     in recognition of her selection as the 1997 Woman of the Year.
