 1-2                              SENATE RESOLUTION

 1-3           WHEREAS, Loyal citizens of the City of Pharr journey to the

 1-4     State Capitol on Thursday, March 20, 1997, to pay tribute to their

 1-5     beloved city; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, Established in 1909, the city is named after

 1-7     Henry N. Pharr, a sugar planter from Louisiana, who purchased 20,000

 1-8     acres and promoted the townsite; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, Located in southern Hidalgo County, Pharr became a

1-10     shipping point on the St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railroad in

1-11     1911; that same year, a hotel, a bank, an irrigation system, and

1-12     several businesses were built; and

1-13           WHEREAS, Incorporated in 1916, the City of Pharr is blessed

1-14     with a sunny and warm climate, making it one of the nation's

1-15     foremost producers of winter vegetables and citrus fruits; and

1-16           WHEREAS, The economy of Pharr is prosperous and diversified,

1-17     and it includes natural gas, cotton production, and a number of

1-18     rapidly growing industries and companies; and

1-19           WHEREAS, Attracted to Pharr for its natural resources,

1-20     visitors to the area enjoy the nearby Santa Ana National Wildlife

1-21     Refuge; several local museums, including the Old Clock Museum and

1-22     Smitty's Juke Box Museum, provide other points of interest; and

1-23           WHEREAS, Pharr is located just 11 miles from the Mexican

 2-1     border, and a new international bridge connects the town with

 2-2     Reynosa, Mexico; shoppers are encouraged to take advantage of

 2-3     impressive bargains; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, A thriving and up-to-date community, Pharr is rich

 2-5     in culture and tradition; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, The citizens of the City of Pharr are to be commended

 2-7     for their industriousness and for their gracious hospitality toward

 2-8     those who visit the beautiful town; now, therefore, be it

 2-9           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-10     75th Legislature, hereby declare March 20, 1997, City of Pharr Day

2-11     at the State Capitol and extend best wishes to its citizens for a

2-12     most memorable and joyous celebration; and, be it further

2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as a

2-14     memento of this grand day.
