 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 366

 1-3           WHEREAS, March 25, 1997, is the day set aside to honor the

 1-4     citizens of Richardson for their notable contributions to the

 1-5     State of Texas; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, A bustling city of 76,164 industrious residents,

 1-7     Richardson is located in Dallas and Collin counties and is separated

 1-8     from the City of Dallas only by city limit markers; its industry

 1-9     includes more than 400 high tech and telecommunications companies;

1-10     and

1-11           WHEREAS, Site of The University of Texas at Dallas, Richardson

1-12     is also a lovely residential city with modern schools, churches,

1-13     banks, and a library; and

1-14           WHEREAS, Offering an excellent quality of life for its

1-15     residents, the city boasts 27 parks covering 1,014 acres that

1-16     provide fitness trails, swimming pools, and tennis courts; and

1-17           WHEREAS, Among its unique treasures are the Owens Spring

1-18     Creek Farm and the Wineburgh Philatelic Research Library; owned by

1-19     a commercial sausage-making firm, the showcase farm and small museum

1-20     display an old-time blacksmith shop, farm kitchen, antiques, and

1-21     vintage sausage-making equipment; Belgian horses, Shetland ponies,

1-22     and small farm animals are a favorite among children and adult

1-23     visitors; and

 2-1           WHEREAS, Stamp hobbyists who come to the Wineburgh Philatelic

 2-2     Research Library on the campus of The University of Texas at Dallas

 2-3     will be enriched by "The Language of Philately" display panels,

 2-4     stamp collection exhibits, and over 18,000 books and journals

 2-5     available for research; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Originally a small settlement called Breckenridge

 2-7     before the Civil War, the community was built around a new station

 2-8     on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad; the City of Richardson

 2-9     changed its name to honor a railroad official, A. S. Richardson,

2-10     in 1892; and

2-11           WHEREAS, The rural village remained virtually unchanged until

2-12     it was affected by the dramatic growth of its neighbor, Dallas, and

2-13     it now takes its rightful place as one of Texas' most exciting and

2-14     productive new cities; now, therefore, be it

2-15           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-16     75th Legislature, hereby extend a hearty welcome to its residents

2-17     as they gather to celebrate Richardson Day at the State Capitol on

2-18     March 25, 1997, with best wishes for a most enjoyable occasion; and,

2-19     be it further

2-20           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be presented to the

2-21     group as an expression of the appreciation and high regard of the

2-22     members of the Texas Senate.
