 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 386

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is proud to honor

 1-4     the Marine Corps League for upholding the noble traditions and

 1-5     responsibilities of members of the United States Marine Corps and

 1-6     for promoting the ideals of American freedom and democracy; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Membership in the Marine Corps League is open to all

 1-8     men and women who are serving or have served in the United States

 1-9     Marine Corps; and

1-10           WHEREAS, Imbued with a deep love of country and a selfless

1-11     desire to carry out their duties, the members of the Marine Corps

1-12     League live by their motto of "Once a Marine, always a Marine" as

1-13     they swear allegiance to their purposes:

1-14           (1)  to preserve the traditions, promote the interest, and

1-15                perpetuate the history of the United States Marine Corps

1-16                and, by fitting acts, to observe the anniversaries of

1-17                historical occasions of particular interest to Marines;

1-18           (2)  to band those who are now serving in the United States

1-19                Marine Corps and those who have been honorably

1-20                discharged from that Service together in fellowship,

1-21                that they may effectively promote the ideals of American

1-22                freedom and democracy;

1-23           (3)  to fit its members for the duties of citizenship and to

 2-1                encourage them to serve ably as citizens as they have

 2-2                served our nation under arms;

 2-3           (4)  to hold sacred memory and history of men and women who

 2-4                have given their lives to the nation;

 2-5           (5)  to foster love for the principles that they have

 2-6                supported by blood and valor since the founding of the

 2-7                Republic;

 2-8           (6)  to maintain true allegiance to American institutions;

 2-9                and

2-10           (7)  to aid voluntarily and to render assistance to all

2-11                Marines, uniformed and civilian, as well as to their

2-12                surviving spouses and orphans; and

2-13           WHEREAS, Serving as a voice in Washington, the Marine Corps

2-14     League represents the interests of its members by helping to ensure

2-15     the retention of earned benefits, adequate funding of the Corps, and

2-16     help for Marine families; and

2-17           WHEREAS, Established in June, 1923, by Marine veterans of

2-18     World War I, and chartered by an Act of Congress on August 4, 1937,

2-19     the Marine Corps League has a long and proud history; it has worked

2-20     continually to offer support to its members who have so faithfully

2-21     served their nation in times of war and in maintaining peace; now,

2-22     therefore, be it

2-23           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-24     75th Legislature, hereby designate June 7, 1997, as Marine Corps

2-25     League Day in Texas in honor of all men and women who have served

 3-1     their country so valiantly and sacrificially since the establishment

 3-2     of the United States Marine Corps; and, be it further

 3-3           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

 3-4     Marine Corps League in recognition of its exceptional contributions

 3-5     to its members and our country.
