 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 393

 1-3           WHEREAS, Jeanette Findlay has been chosen as the 1996 Citizen

 1-4     of the Year by the Ballinger Chamber of Commerce for her exemplary

 1-5     contributions to the people of her community; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, Admired for her enthusiasm and her dedication to

 1-7     every project she undertakes, Mrs. Findlay has been an inspiration

 1-8     to others who share her concerns for the city; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, The native Texan was born to military parents at

1-10     Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas, and traveled extensively during

1-11     her childhood; she attended school at Greenham Common, England,

1-12     and at Chelmsford, Massachusetts, where she graduated in 1969; she

1-13     was a student at Lowell Tech and Lowell State College in the 1970s

1-14     before earning a degree in psychology from Angelo State University

1-15     in the early 1990s; and

1-16           WHEREAS, After moving to Ballinger in 1988 when her parents

1-17     bought the Olde Park Hotel and asked Jeanette to be the manager,

1-18     she became deeply involved in renovating the old building and

1-19     opening an antique shop, tearoom, and bed and breakfast; after

1-20     buying the old rock building next door to the hotel, the family

1-21     renovated it and opened a mercantile business; and

1-22           WHEREAS, As her interest in restoring the town increased,

1-23     Jeanette organized the "Christmas in Olde Ballinger" project,

 2-1     then turned her talents to organizing the Christmas Lighting at

 2-2     the Courthouse Square; in early October she and her volunteers

 2-3     begin the arduous task of putting up decorations for the holidays,

 2-4     then taking them down again; and

 2-5           WHEREAS, Throughout the rest of the year, she is busy working

 2-6     with volunteers to beautify the garden area in the city park or

 2-7     donating her time to work with probationers, juvenile offenders,

 2-8     and prisoners from the Runnels County Jail; by promoting useful

 2-9     activities that keep the inmates busy, Jeanette helps them restore

2-10     pride in themselves; and

2-11           WHEREAS, Her meritorious work and exemplary devotion to her

2-12     community have earned her the appreciation and high regard of the

2-13     citizens of Ballinger; now, therefore, be it

2-14           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-15     75th Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to Jeanette Findlay

2-16     for being named 1996 Citizen of the Year and commend her for her

2-17     notable achievements that have benefitted all the residents of

2-18     Ballinger; and, be it further

2-19           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

2-20     Jeanette Findlay as an expression of the high regard and

2-21     appreciation of the Texas Senate.
