1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 396 1-3 WHEREAS, March 26, 1997, is the day set aside to honor the 1-4 City of Hillsboro at the State Capitol, and the Texas Senate is 1-5 proud to be a part of this special celebration; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Established in 1853 when Hill County was created in 1-7 central Texas from land vacated as the Indians moved westward, the 1-8 rowdy frontier town on the Blackland Prairie was a trading center 1-9 for ranchers and farmers; and 1-10 WHEREAS, At the close of the War Between the States, settlers 1-11 from the Old South were drawn to the area with its blackland soils 1-12 to start a new cotton industry, and the cotton boom came with the 1-13 arrival of the railroad in 1881; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Located near the heart of Hill County at the 1-15 intersection of two major highways, Hillsboro is the principal 1-16 trade center and county seat; its industrious citizens are proud 1-17 of their Southern heritage and the town's contributions to the 1-18 State of Texas; and 1-19 WHEREAS, The lovely city has preserved many of its Victorian 1-20 homes, which were restored when Hillsboro was chosen as one of 1-21 the first five Main Street cities in Texas; nearby Lake Aquilla 1-22 and Lake Whitney State Park on the Brazos River draw thousands 1-23 of vacationers a year, who enjoy the excellent fishing, swimming, 2-1 boating, and camping facilities; and 2-2 WHEREAS, Overlooking the town on a nearby hill sits the 2-3 campus of Hill College; the Confederate Research Center located 2-4 on the campus is devoted to the Civil War era, especially to the 2-5 history of Hood's Brigade, Confederate States of America, with 2-6 more than 3,000 volumes, maps, photographs, correspondence, and 2-7 dioramas; and 2-8 WHEREAS, Hillsboro's many fine antique shops and historic 2-9 district attract visitors and tourists throughout the year; the 2-10 warm hospitality shown by the residents is one of the city's 2-11 notable assets; now, therefore, be it 2-12 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-13 75th Legislature, hereby recognize the contributions of the 2-14 citizens of Hillsboro to the state's dynamic growth and extend 2-15 best wishes for a most rewarding and enjoyable Hillsboro Day 2-16 celebration at the State Capitol on March 26, 1997; and, be it 2-17 further 2-18 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-19 the City of Hillsboro as an expression of the admiration of the 2-20 Texas Senate. 2-21 Sibley 2-22 ______________________________________ 2-23 President of the Senate 2-24 I hereby certify that the above 2-25 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-26 on March 26, 1997. 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 Secretary of the Senate 2-29 ______________________________________ 3-1 Member, Texas Senate
