1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 399

        1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of Texas is pleased to recognize the

        1-3     Scholar-Athlete program instituted seven years ago by GTE and

        1-4     Texas A&M University to promote the achievements of young Texans

        1-5     who excel both athletically and scholastically; and

        1-6           WHEREAS, This year, the number of scholar-athletes recognized

        1-7     for their accomplishments is a record 296 students; and

        1-8           WHEREAS, Education and athletics are not mutually exclusive

        1-9     goals, but they serve to develop the entire human being; combining

       1-10     these two aspects of an education helps expand the capabilities of

       1-11     all young people; and

       1-12           WHEREAS, Reaching the ideal of a strong mind in a strong body,

       1-13     the scholar-athlete is a positive role model for others to follow;

       1-14     and

       1-15           WHEREAS, Nationally known as the state in which many

       1-16     scholar-athletes are educated and trained, the State of Texas

       1-17     takes great pride in its excellent reputation; and

       1-18           WHEREAS, These exemplary young men and women have accomplished

       1-19     their purposes through their hard work and dedication; now,

       1-20     therefore, be it

       1-21           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

       1-22     75th Legislature, hereby congratulate its student-athletes who

       1-23     serve as a tremendous source of inspiration to their families,

        2-1     schools, and communities, and declare April 6, 1997, as

        2-2     Student-Athlete Day in Texas; and, be it further

        2-3           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared as an

        2-4     expression of the high regard of the Texas Senate.
