1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 405 1-3 WHEREAS, In anticipation of welcoming over 200,000 NASCAR 1-4 fans to Texas and commemorating the inaugural racing events at 1-5 the new Texas Motor Speedway, developed by Bruton Smith, CEO of 1-6 Speedway Motor Sports, and under the direction of Eddie Gossage, 1-7 General Manager, and the economic impact for Texas which comes 1-8 with this exciting professional sport, the Texas Senate recognizes 1-9 the NASCAR 1996 Winston Cup Championship team represented by 1-10 Terry Labonte, Driver, George Dehart, Crew Chief, and Rick Hendrix, 1-11 Owner of the Number 5 Kellogg's Chevrolet Monte Carlo; and 1-12 WHEREAS, Hendrix Motorsports and sponsor Kellogg's entered the 1-13 1996 Winston Cup season with Corpus Christi native Terry Labonte 1-14 as the driver; and 1-15 WHEREAS, During 1996, Terry Labonte drove the Kellogg's 1-16 Number 5 Monte Carlo to victory twice, raced to 21 top-five 1-17 finishes and 24 top-10 finishes, and captured his second Winston 1-18 Cup Championship; and 1-19 WHEREAS, Terry Labonte's $4,030,648 earnings in 1996 moved him 1-20 to fourth place on NASCAR's all-time earnings list; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Terry Labonte made history in 1996 by breaking the 1-22 legendary Richard Petty's mark of 513 consecutive starts on April 20 1-23 of that year racing the Goody's 500 at Martinsville, Virginia, 2-1 becoming the Winston Cup's new "Ironman," and maintained his streak 2-2 by starting the 1997 season with 537 consecutive starts; now, 2-3 therefore, be it 2-4 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-5 75th Legislature, hereby commend Terry Labonte on his achievement 2-6 and extend best wishes in appreciation for promoting tourism in the 2-7 State of Texas and the upcoming 1997 NASCAR events at Texas Motor 2-8 Speedway; and, be it further 2-9 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-10 Champion Terry Labonte, George Dehart, and Rick Hendrix as an 2-11 expression of highest esteem. 2-12 Truan 2-13 Armbrister Galloway Ogden 2-14 Barrientos Harris Patterson 2-15 Bivins Haywood Ratliff 2-16 Brown Lindsay Shapiro 2-17 Cain Lucio Shapleigh 2-18 Carona Luna Sibley 2-19 Duncan Madla Wentworth 2-20 Ellis Moncrief West 2-21 Fraser Nelson Whitmire 2-22 Gallegos Nixon Zaffirini 2-23 Bullock, President of the Senate 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 President of the Senate 2-26 I hereby certify that the above 2-27 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-28 on March 26, 1997. 2-29 ______________________________________ 2-30 Secretary of the Senate 2-31 ______________________________________ 2-32 Dean of the Senate
