1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 408

        1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in

        1-3     recognizing the Dimmit County Airport on its selection as the

        1-4     recipient of the 1997 Achievement Award for Most Improved Airport

        1-5     by the Texas Department of Transportation; and

        1-6           WHEREAS, Due largely to the collaborative efforts of

        1-7     County Judge Charles Johnson, Airport Manager Ernest Martinez, and

        1-8     County Commissioner Rodrigo Jaime, and due to the support of local

        1-9     citizens, the Dimmit County Airport is now an impressive site and

       1-10     a source of much pride to the community; and

       1-11           WHEREAS, With the assistance of County Judge Charles Johnson,

       1-12     Ernest Martinez secured funding and labor from the area citizens to

       1-13     make a wide variety of improvements; he organized a large clean-up

       1-14     project on the south end of the airport, enhanced the appearance

       1-15     of the terminal area by landscaping and building a fountain and

       1-16     waterfall, and procured a premanufactured terminal building; and

       1-17           WHEREAS, With the help of Commissioner Jaime, a hangar that

       1-18     was in the safety area of the taxiway was moved to an area that

       1-19     complies with Federal Aviation Administration safety guidelines; and

       1-20           WHEREAS, Since these significant improvements were made, two

       1-21     nearby companies regularly use the airport, and in the months of

       1-22     October through February, the economy is enhanced by hunters flying

       1-23     in from all over the United States; the airport also serves as the

        2-1     medical transfer point for the surrounding area; and

        2-2           WHEREAS, Additional hangars have been planned for the airport,

        2-3     as well as a restaurant and small motel, and the airport has begun

        2-4     to play a major role in the area's economy by attracting businesses

        2-5     and accommodating tourism; now, therefore, be it

        2-6           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

        2-7     75th Legislature, hereby commend all those who have been responsible

        2-8     for the extensive improvement of the Dimmit County Airport and extend

        2-9     appreciation to them for their many contributions to Dimmit County;

       2-10     and, be it further

       2-11           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

       2-12     airport as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
