 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 425

 1-3           WHEREAS, On Tuesday, April 8, 1997, the justifiably proud

 1-4     citizens of Denton County will celebrate Denton County Day and the

 1-5     county's manifold accomplishments at the State Capitol; and

 1-6           WHEREAS, Just north of the Fort Worth-Dallas Metroplex,

 1-7     Denton is the fastest growing county in the state and the fifth

 1-8     in the nation; and

 1-9           WHEREAS, The charming town of Denton is the county seat of

1-10     Denton County, and the current population of the Denton County area

1-11     is 335,000 people; and

1-12           WHEREAS, One of several counties created from the Peters

1-13     Colony Grant by the First Legislature, the county was named to honor

1-14     pioneer lawyer, minister, and Indian fighter John B. Denton; and

1-15           WHEREAS, The famous Denton County Courthouse, built of large

1-16     limestone blocks, was designed in 1895, and it was restored in 1987;

1-17     and

1-18           WHEREAS, The county boasts a lower tax rate than either

1-19     Dallas County or Tarrant County, and it has the highest rating it

1-20     can get for a county its size, a AA bond rating; and

1-21           WHEREAS, Denton County is a center for modern industry, and

1-22     some of the corporate clients located there include American

1-23     Airlines, Texas Instruments, Peterbilt, Texas International

 2-1     Speedway, Frito Lay, Boeing, Tetra Pak, Xerox, Federal Express,

 2-2     Perot Group, J. C. Penney, and Alliance Development; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, Historically a rich agricultural area, the blackland

 2-4     soil there produces large amounts of hay, wheat, grain sorghums, and

 2-5     peanuts; beef and dairy cattle, and horses are raised there; and

 2-6           WHEREAS, Since its earliest days, the settlers of the area

 2-7     have been greatly interested in education and religion; the cultural

 2-8     opportunities of the area are found mainly around the Arts Complex,

 2-9     the University of North Texas, and Texas Woman's University; and

2-10           WHEREAS, Opportunities for recreation include golf, hunting,

2-11     and water sports at nearby Lake Lewisville, Lake Ray Roberts, and

2-12     Lake Grapevine; the citizens of Denton County are to be commended

2-13     for their industriousness and for their gracious hospitality to

2-14     those who visit the area; and

2-15           WHEREAS, It is indeed a pleasure and a privilege for the

2-16     Texas Senate to honor this outstanding county and its fine citizens;

2-17     now, therefore, be it

2-18           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-19     75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere congratulations to the

2-20     citizens of Denton County on their special day; and, be it further

2-21           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for this

2-22     outstanding county as a memento of this auspicious occasion.
