1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 439 1-3 In Memory 1-4 of 1-5 James A. Howden 1-6 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the citizens 1-7 of San Antonio in mourning the loss of James A. Howden, who died 1-8 March 22, 1997, at the age of 71; and 1-9 WHEREAS, Born in 1925 in Brooklyn, New York, James Howden 1-10 grew up in Manhattan and Los Angeles and joined the United States 1-11 Army in 1944, where he served for 34 years and was promoted to the 1-12 rank of lieutenant colonel; he was a graduate of the University of 1-13 Illinois; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Colonel Howden fought in the Battle of the Bulge 1-15 and Rhineland Campaign and received Combat Medic and Combat 1-16 Infantryman's badges; he later was assigned to the 3rd Armored 1-17 Cavalry and fought in five Korean campaigns; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Other assignments included duty with the 1-19 United States Navy Amphibious Group II, where he participated in 1-20 Gemini 10 Recovery, and as Staff Officer, Military Command, in 1-21 Vietnam during the Tet Offensive; he served as Executive Officer 1-22 of his beloved 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment and retired in 1978; 1-23 and 2-1 WHEREAS, In addition to his outstanding military career, 2-2 Mr. Howden worked as a security manager with McDonnell Douglas 2-3 Corporation in Saudi Arabia, and toward the end of his life, he 2-4 worked at the Kings X toy soldier shop in the Menger Hotel; and 2-5 WHEREAS, An exemplary and distinguished gentleman, 2-6 Jim Howden was respected for his many accomplishments, and his 2-7 valor in the face of his illness touched the lives of many; and 2-8 WHEREAS, A man of integrity, strength, and generosity, he 2-9 gave unselfishly of his time to others, and his wisdom, warmth, 2-10 and sense of humor will not be forgotten by those who knew him; 2-11 and 2-12 WHEREAS, Jim Howden was a devoted husband, father, 2-13 and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be 2-14 treasured forever by his family and many friends; now, 2-15 therefore, be it 2-16 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-17 75th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the 2-18 bereaved family of James A.
