1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 450

        1-2           WHEREAS, The Texas Senate takes pride in recognizing Alpha

        1-3     Phi Alpha Fraternity at The University of Texas at Austin and its

        1-4     celebration of Hope Week, which takes place April 13 through 19,

        1-5     1997; and

        1-6           WHEREAS, Created in 1992, Hope Week is an effort to promote

        1-7     racial harmony on the university's campus and in the greater

        1-8     Austin community; the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity sponsors the

        1-9     event and hosts daily programs throughout the week in an effort

       1-10     to enhance communication and understanding among groups and

       1-11     individuals; and

       1-12           WHEREAS, In sponsoring this event, the fraternity has

       1-13     traditionally received support and endorsements from a wide

       1-14     array of offices and organizations, such as the Office of the

       1-15     Dean of Students, the Office of the President, the African-American

       1-16     Culture Committee, and Coors Brewing Company; and

       1-17           WHEREAS, The fraternity publicizes the event through the sale

       1-18     of T-shirts that faculty, staff, and students can wear throughout

       1-19     the year; in 1995, 850 people participated in the event, and the

       1-20     fraternity is working hard to increase that number this year; and

       1-21           WHEREAS, Hope Week 1997 will include a church service, a

       1-22     multicultural mixer and forum, an international fest, a play,

       1-23     and a United Colors Jam; the activities will offer an excellent

        2-1     opportunity for people of all cultures to interact and to find

        2-2     resolutions to problems that have long been associated with racism;

        2-3     now, therefore, be it

        2-4           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

        2-5     75th Legislature, hereby commend the Epsilon Iota Chapter of

        2-6     Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity on its efforts to promote racial

        2-7     harmony at The University of Texas at Austin and throughout

        2-8     the city and extend best wishes to the fraternity for a highly

        2-9     successful Hope Week; and, be it further

       2-10           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

       2-11     Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity as an expression of esteem from the

       2-12     Texas Senate.
