1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 487 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-4 recognizing the citizens of Plano and joins with them in designating 1-5 May 8, 1997, Plano Gray Ribbon Campaign Day; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The silver/gray ribbon has become the international 1-7 symbol of members of the diabetic community and represents their 1-8 demand for a cure for their disease; on Gray Ribbon Campaign Day, 1-9 the ribbon is worn to make the public more aware of the disease 1-10 and of the large number of people it strikes; and 1-11 WHEREAS, Diabetes is a chronic, life-threatening illness and 1-12 is the nation's fourth leading cause of death by disease; diabetes 1-13 kills more than 160,000 Americans each year and is a major cause 1-14 of heart disease, stroke, amputations, blindness, and kidney 1-15 disease; there are approximately 16 million diabetics in the 1-16 United States today; and 1-17 WHEREAS, The diabetic community hopes that additional federal 1-18 funding will be available for research on a cure for diabetes and 1-19 that approval of a noninvasive blood glucose testing device by the 1-20 Food and Drug Administration be expedited; and 1-21 WHEREAS, Plano Gray Ribbon Campaign Day is an opportunity 1-22 for citizens to learn more about diabetes, both Type I and Type II, 1-23 and will hopefully enlighten the public about the problems faced 2-1 by diabetics and their need for national and global support; now, 2-2 therefore, be it 2-3 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-4 75th Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Plano for the 2-5 support they offer to diabetics and their causes and extend best 2-6 wishes for a highly successful Plano Gray Ribbon Campaign Day; and, 2-7 be it further 2-8 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-9 City of Plano as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-10 Shapiro 2-11 Carona 2-12 ______________________________________ 2-13 President of the Senate 2-14 I hereby certify that the above 2-15 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-16 on May 8, 1997. 2-17 ______________________________________ 2-18 Secretary of the Senate 2-19 ______________________________________ 2-20 Member, Texas Senate 2-21 ______________________________________ 2-22 Member, Texas Senate
