1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 489 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of Texas takes pleasure in extending its 1-4 regards to the Texas Senate Ladies Club, which is celebrating its 1-5 70th anniversary year; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The club was founded in 1927, during the 1-7 40th Legislature, by Mrs. Martha Wood, wife of Senator A. R. Wood, 1-8 who invited the wives who had accompanied their husbands to Austin 1-9 to form a club, and Mrs. Wood was elected president; and 1-10 WHEREAS, Every Monday the group met at the Stephen F. Austin 1-11 Hotel in the Sun Room, where they played Auction Bridge; two of 1-12 the women were volunteer hostesses and paid for the prizes and 1-13 refreshments; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Mainly organized as a social group, the members 1-15 of the club wanted to know each other better and to acquaint 1-16 themselves with Austin citizens; and 1-17 WHEREAS, During the 41st Legislature in February, 1930, 1-18 the members of the club drafted their constitution and bylaws 1-19 and designated a nominating committee to fill the offices of the 1-20 club; and 1-21 WHEREAS, The club decided that charter members would be 1-22 all 1927 and 1929 lady Senators and Senators' wives; in addition, 1-23 the club members wanted to give a dinner before the governor's 2-1 inauguration to honor the governor, the governor-elect, the 2-2 lieutenant governor, and the lieutenant governor-elect, and their 2-3 wives, and to introduce the new Senators and their wives; and 2-4 WHEREAS, Today, the custom of the honorary dinner is repeated 2-5 the night before the opening day of the legislative session; the 2-6 current officers of this estimable club are: Susie Armbrister, 2-7 president; Jill Brown, vice president; Emma Barrientos, secretary; 2-8 Pat Haywood, treasurer; Karla Wentworth, parliamentarian; and 2-9 Marilyn Schwartz, historian; and 2-10 WHEREAS, Honorary members of the club are the spouses of 2-11 the present governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general; 2-12 associate members are women who were members of the Senate or who 2-13 were married to a former senator while he was serving in the 2-14 Senate, and active members are women currently serving in the 2-15 Senate and the wives of those currently serving; now, therefore, 2-16 be it 2-17 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-18 75th Legislature, hereby congratulate and commend the Senate 2-19 Ladies Club on its 70th anniversary year; and, be it further 2-20 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the 2-21 club as an expression of the highest regard and esteem of the 2-22 Texas Senate. 2-23 Armbrister 2-24 ______________________________________ 2-25 President of the Senate 2-26 I hereby certify that the above 2-27 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 3-1 on April 16, 1997. 3-2 ______________________________________ 3-3 Secretary of the Senate 3-4 ______________________________________ 3-5 Member, Texas Senate
