1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 494 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-4 joining the Texas Association of Counties in recognizing County 1-5 Government Day at the Capitol on Wednesday, April 16, 1997; and 1-6 WHEREAS, The week of April 13 through 18 is National County 1-7 Government Week, an annual event created by the National 1-8 Association of Counties that provides an opportunity to recognize 1-9 the many contributions to our citizens and states made by county 1-10 governments; and 1-11 WHEREAS, County government is the oldest form of local 1-12 government in the United States, and 98 percent of our nation's 1-13 people reside in counties; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Counties address many of our nation's most critical 1-15 issues including environmental protection, indigent health care, 1-16 special assistance to the elderly, job training, and public 1-17 safety; and 1-18 WHEREAS, Today in Texas, there are 254 counties providing 1-19 services to our state's citizens, and serving as an elected or 1-20 appointed county official requires dedication, hard work, and 1-21 a strong sense of purpose; and 1-22 WHEREAS, The mission of Texas county government is to meet 1-23 the needs of our state's citizens without placing undue burden 2-1 on local taxpayers and to find solutions to problems that will 2-2 benefit all Texans; and 2-3 WHEREAS, The Texas Association of Counties encourages 2-4 citizens across the state to use National County Government Week 2-5 as an opportunity to become educated on county history and on the 2-6 methods by which counties serve the public; now, therefore, be it 2-7 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-8 75th Legislature, hereby welcome the members of the Texas 2-9 Association of Counties to the Capitol and express appreciation 2-10 to the counties of Texas for their many contributions to our 2-11 state; and, be it further 2-12 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-13 the Texas Association of Counties as an expression of esteem 2-14 from the Texas Senate. 2-15 Haywood 2-16 Armbrister Galloway Patterson 2-17 Barrientos Harris Ratliff 2-18 Bivins Lindsay Shapiro 2-19 Brown Lucio Shapleigh 2-20 Cain Luna Sibley 2-21 Carona Madla Truan 2-22 Duncan Moncrief Wentworth 2-23 Ellis Nelson West 2-24 Fraser Nixon Whitmire 2-25 Gallegos Ogden Zaffirini 2-26 Bullock, President of the Senate 2-27 ______________________________________ 2-28 President of the Senate 2-29 I hereby certify that the above 2-30 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-31 on April 16, 1997. 2-32 ______________________________________ 2-33 Secretary of the Senate 2-34 ______________________________________ 2-35 Member, Texas Senate
