 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 495

 1-3           WHEREAS, The Senate of Texas takes pleasure in recognizing the

 1-4     Texas Federation of Women's Clubs on the auspicious occasion of its

 1-5     100th anniversary on May 1, 1997; the federation is a member of the

 1-6     General Federation of Women's Clubs; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Founded in Waco in 1897, the Texas Federation

 1-8     of Women's Clubs has as its purpose to unite women's clubs and

 1-9     similar organizations throughout Texas to promote activities in

1-10     the areas of education, conservation, public affairs, the arts,

1-11     and Texas heritage; and

1-12           WHEREAS, The Texas Federation of Women's Clubs organized

1-13     85 percent of all the libraries in Texas, supported a pure foods

1-14     bill, and sponsored mental health programs; and

1-15           WHEREAS, The clubs are some of the world's oldest and largest

1-16     women's volunteer organizations, and the members of these clubs

1-17     include college students, retirees, teachers, homemakers, business

1-18     owners, and corporate executives; and

1-19           WHEREAS, The General Federation of Women's Clubs has about

1-20     6,500 clubs in large and small communities throughout the country

1-21     and over one million members worldwide; and

1-22           WHEREAS, This outstanding group has amassed an impressive array

1-23     of achievements; they established the national model for juvenile

 2-1     courts, supported legislation for the eight-hour working day, and

 2-2     encouraged the first child labor law; and

 2-3           WHEREAS, In addition, the General Federation of Women's Clubs

 2-4     supported equal pay for equal work, began an educational program

 2-5     on substance abuse for women and children, and founded the Women's

 2-6     History and Resource Center; and

 2-7           WHEREAS, The Texas Federation of Women's Clubs has sponsored

 2-8     scholarships, aided conservation groups, and helped organize other

 2-9     groups such as the Texas Garden Clubs and Home Demonstration Clubs;

2-10     truly a group which has made such contributions is deserving of

2-11     legislative recognition; now, therefore, be it

2-12           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-13     75th Legislature, hereby congratulate the Texas Federation of

2-14     Women's Clubs on the celebration of the 100th anniversary of its

2-15     founding; and, be it further

2-16           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the

2-17     group as an expression of the highest regard and esteem of the

2-18     Texas Senate.
