1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 496 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride in 1-4 recognizing Robert Wilson on the grand occasion of the installation 1-5 of his six and one-half ton sculpture at The Art Center of Waco; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Robert Wilson's sculpture, The Waco Door, stands 22 1-7 feet high and was designed in Europe and sculpted in California; it 1-8 is being installed on the grounds and sculpture path of The Art 1-9 Center of Waco on April 18, 1997; and 1-10 WHEREAS, A Waco-born artist, Robert Wilson is internationally 1-11 known for his talent and wide-ranging expertise; while his chief 1-12 gallery is the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York, his magnificent 1-13 works have been shown throughout the world; and 1-14 WHEREAS, Robert Wilson won the Golden Lion Award for 1-15 sculpture at the 1993 Venice Biennial with the installation of 1-16 Memory/Loss; he has had a one-man exhibition at the Contemporary 1-17 Art Museum of Houston, and his exhibit at the Pompidou Center in 1-18 Paris marked the only time that the museum allotted all of its 1-19 floors to one artist; and 1-20 WHEREAS, A remarkable individual who is gifted in a wide 1-21 array of artistic areas, Mr. Wilson has acted in all parts of 1-22 Hamlet A Monologue, has directed numerous projects at the Alley 1-23 Theater, and staged and directed his version of Gertrude Stein's 2-1 and Virgil Thompson's 1934 opera Four Saints in Three Acts at the 2-2 Houston Grand Opera; and 2-3 WHEREAS, He worked last fall with Susan Sontag on an 2-4 adaptation of an Ibsen play, and his new production of Wagner's 2-5 Lohengrin is scheduled to debut at the Metropolitan Opera House 2-6 in 1998; and 2-7 WHEREAS, The installation of The Waco Door on April 18 is an 2-8 opportunity for citizens of Texas to gather together in celebration 2-9 of the creativity and imaginative genius of one of our state's most 2-10 gifted artists; now, therefore, be it 2-11 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 2-12 75th Legislature, hereby commend Robert Wilson on his lifelong 2-13 artistic contributions to our state and to the world and declare 2-14 April 18, 1997, as Robert Wilson Day in Texas; and, be it further 2-15 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for 2-16 Robert Wilson as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. 2-17 Sibley 2-18 ______________________________________ 2-19 President of the Senate 2-20 I hereby certify that the above 2-21 Resolution was adopted by the Senate 2-22 on April 15, 1997. 2-23 ______________________________________ 2-24 Secretary of the Senate 2-25 ______________________________________ 2-26 Member, Texas Senate
