1-1                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 497

        1-2           WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes pride

        1-3     in joining with the citizens of Hood County in recognizing

        1-4     April 15, 1997, as Hood County Day at the State Capitol; and

        1-5           WHEREAS, Organized in 1866 from Johnson County, Hood County

        1-6     was named for Confederate General John B. Hood; the area is known

        1-7     for its rolling grasslands, sandy soil, and majestic pecan and oak

        1-8     trees; and

        1-9           WHEREAS, Hood County is crossed by the Paluxy and Brazos

       1-10     rivers and is home to Granbury Lake, a scenic site for fishing and

       1-11     picnicking; and

       1-12           WHEREAS, The County Seat of Hood County, Granbury, is nestled

       1-13     on the shores of Lake Granbury and is known for its celebrations

       1-14     and festivals, its historic district, and its fine antique shops

       1-15     and historic homes; and

       1-16           WHEREAS, Granbury was the model chosen for the Texas Main

       1-17     Street program to be used as an example for other towns for

       1-18     recapturing and restoring the history, architecture, and

       1-19     ambiance of early Texas; and

       1-20           WHEREAS, Home to the Dora Lee Langdon Cultural and

       1-21     Education Center of Tarleton State University, Granbury has

       1-22     become a well-known cultural center; the Granbury Opera House,

       1-23     built in the 1880s, has been restored and is now in operation; and

        2-1           WHEREAS, Hood County is noted for its agribusiness,

        2-2     tourism, and gas production; its chief crops include hay, peanuts,

        2-3     and pecans; and

        2-4           WHEREAS, Hood County Day is an opportunity for friends and

        2-5     families to gather and celebrate the history of Hood County and

        2-6     its many assets today which are enjoyed by residents and by

        2-7     tourists from across the state; now, therefore, be it

        2-8           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

        2-9     75th Legislature, hereby express appreciation to the people

       2-10     of Hood County and Granbury for the exemplary restoration of

       2-11     historical sites and the preservation of the county's many

       2-12     amenities; and, be it further

       2-13           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for

       2-14     the citizens of Hood County as an expression of esteem from the

       2-15     Texas Senate.
