1-1 1 1-2 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 506 1-3 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas takes great 1-4 pleasure in recognizing Margaret A. Dixon, who is president of 1-5 the American Association of Retired Persons; and 1-6 WHEREAS, Elected vice president at the 1992 Biennial 1-7 Convention, she automatically succeeded to the position of 1-8 president elect at the convention in 1994 and in 1996 became 1-9 president of the association; and 1-10 WHEREAS, The nation's leading organization for people 50 1-11 and over, the American Association of Retired Persons serves the 1-12 needs of its members through research, community services, and 1-13 legislative advocacy; and 1-14 WHEREAS, In addition to her duties as president of the 1-15 association, Dr. Dixon serves on the American Association of 1-16 Retired Persons Executive Committee and the Board Finance 1-17 Committee; she is a member of the National Legislative Council 1-18 and chair of the American Association of Retired Persons Andrus 1-19 Foundation Board of Trustees; and 1-20 WHEREAS, While she was president elect, Dr. Dixon served as 1-21 chair of the Board Strategic Planning Committee and as a member 1-22 of the Board Operations Committee and National Retired Teachers 1-23 Association Task Force; and 2-1 WHEREAS, Active and enthusiastic, she served previously on 2-2 the board of trustees of the American Association of Retired 2-3 Persons investment program, was a trustee of the association's 2-4 Group Health Insurance Trust, and was on the board of councillors 2-5 of the Ethel Percy Andrus Gerontology Center at the University of 2-6 Southern California; and 2-7 WHEREAS, A woman who continues to contribute her time and 2-8 talents, she also has been National Secretary, a member of the 2-9 Board Audit Committee and the Chapter Advisory Committee, and a 2-10 minority affairs spokesperson; and 2-11 WHEREAS, Before her retirement, Dr. Dixon was a principal 2-12 and director of several special programs for the New York City 2-13 Board of Education, and she was supervising principal for the 2-14 Teacher Education of Brooklyn College; and 2-15 WHEREAS, Some of her postretirement activities included 2-16 being associate professor and director of teacher education at 2-17 Allen University in Columbia, South Carolina, and she was 2-18 consultant to South Carolina's Department of Education; and 2-19 WHEREAS, The recipient of countless honors, Dr. Dixon 2-20 received a Ford Foundation Fellowship for graduate study in 2-21 educational leadership, a graduate fellowship for study in 2-22 education of people with disabilities, and the Delta Sigma Theta 2-23 Living Legacy Award for Outstanding Community Service; certainly 2-24 an active participant such as Dr. Dixon is worthy of legislative 2-25 recognition; now, therefore, be it 3-1 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 3-2 75th Legislature, hereby congratulate Margaret A.
