 1-2                          SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 516

 1-3           WHEREAS, It is a distinct pleasure for the Texas Senate to

 1-4     extend a warm welcome to the students from Plano High School and

 1-5     their sponsors who are visiting the State Capitol on Wednesday,

 1-6     April 16, 1997; and

 1-7           WHEREAS, Plano Senior High School, under the direction of

 1-8     principal Dr. Doyle Dean and associate principals Jean Warren and

 1-9     Glenn Davis, is known throughout the State of Texas and the nation

1-10     for its academic excellence; and

1-11           WHEREAS, The high school has won numerous awards regarding

1-12     its academic excellence; it has been ranked as an "Exemplary School"

1-13     by the Texas Education Agency and named a "Blue Ribbon School" in

1-14     1984-1985 and in 1995-1996 by the United States Department of

1-15     Education; and

1-16           WHEREAS, With 1,400 students expecting to graduate in the

1-17     spring of 1997, Plano High School boasts the largest graduating

1-18     class in the state for the academic year; this semester alone, the

1-19     government department is educating over 600 juniors and seniors

1-20     about our national, state, and local governments; and

1-21           WHEREAS, Assistant principal John Strand and government

1-22     teachers Sunny Wells and Stacey Fox are to be commended for bringing

1-23     a small group of government students to the Texas State Capitol to

 2-1     allow the students to see government in action, witness the tenets

 2-2     of popular sovereignty and democracy in practice, and recognize the

 2-3     importance of citizen participation; and

 2-4           WHEREAS, This highly informative student trip is the

 2-5     result of the exceptional support of Social Studies Department

 2-6     Chairperson Sarah Franklin and the encouragement of fellow

 2-7     government teachers Robert Green, Dodie Kasper, Mary Jo Lewis,

 2-8     Scott Fenney, Barbara Kellum, and Dale Fleury; and

 2-9           WHEREAS, The government students will have an opportunity

2-10     to view the Texas Legislature, meet with Governor George W. Bush,

2-11     and tour the Texas Supreme Court, thereby incorporating the three

2-12     branches of the Texas government into their experience; and

2-13           WHEREAS, It is the hope of the Texas Senate, Plano Senior High

2-14     School, and the government teachers that this real world experience

2-15     will inspire these students to become involved in their government;

2-16     now, therefore, be it

2-17           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

2-18     75th Legislature, hereby extend best wishes to the government

2-19     students and their sponsors from Plano High School for a most

2-20     informative and rewarding visit to the State Capitol.
