       1-3                                      of

       1-4                             Rutilio R. Garza, Jr.

       1-5           WHEREAS, The citizens of Harlingen mourned the untimely passing

       1-6     of Rutilio R. "Rudy" Garza, Jr., who died March 29, 1997; and

       1-7           WHEREAS, Born in Mercedes, Rudy graduated from Commonwealth

       1-8     College of Mortuary Science in Houston; in 1966 he began what was

       1-9     to become a highly successful career when he became manager and part

      1-10     owner of Crespo Funeral Home in Houston; he founded Garza Funerals

      1-11     there in 1974 before moving the business to Harlingen in 1979; and

      1-12           WHEREAS, An excellent businessman, Mr. Garza owned Rudy Garza

      1-13     Funerals, and funeral homes in La Feria and Mercedes; he also owned

      1-14     Harlingen Monument Company and Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery; and

      1-15           WHEREAS, A compassionate and generous philanthropist, Mr. Garza

      1-16     strongly supported civic organizations and freely donated his time

      1-17     and money to churches, schools, and charity; Rudy was a sponsor for

      1-18     Rio Hondo and Harlingen Future Farmers of America projects and county

      1-19     livestock shows; and

      1-20           WHEREAS, Recognized by his colleagues for his leadership

      1-21     abilities, Mr. Garza was a past president of the South Texas

      1-22     Funeral Directors Association; he was a member of the League of

      1-23     United Latin American Citizens, Harlingen Area Chamber of Commerce,

       2-1     and Knights of Columbus; now, therefore, be it

       2-2           RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,

       2-3     75th Legislature, hereby extend deepest sympathy to the family of

       2-4     Rutilio R. "Rudy" Garza, Jr.:  his wife, Consuelo; his son,

       2-5     Rutilio "Trei" Garza III; his daughters, Sandi Garza,

       2-6     Thelma "Tammy" Garza Almendarez, and Sonia Garza; and his mother,

       2-7     Concepcion Garza; and, be it further

       2-8           RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his

       2-9     family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate,

      2-10     and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of

      2-11     Rutilio R. "Rudy" Garza, Jr.
